About the Internship

Woodruff Scout Camp is seeking motivated Education Majors to serve as teaching interns across several program areas. Interns teach daily classes, design instructional activities, prepare materials, and guide Scouts ages 11–17 through engaging, skill-based learning experiences.


 

Interns are placed in one of several educational departments:

• Mac Mountain Studio Arts (Art, Leatherwork, Wood Carving, Pottery, Photography, Music)

• STEM & Robotics

• Ecology/Nature Studies

• Outdoor Skills & Scouting Skills Instruction

• Aquatics Education

• Shooting Sports Instruction

• Handicraft & Creative Arts


 

Compensation & Benefits

• $1,200 per month

• Free housing, meals, and some uniform pieces provided

• Internship credit available (school approval required)

• Opportunity to build a professional teaching portfolio

• Hands-on experience with genuine teaching responsibilities


 

Position Summary

Interns serve as instructors or assistant instructors in their assigned program area. Each day, you’ll teach structured lessons, guide youth through hands-on activities, and practice professional teaching skills in a supportive environment. Some areas include leading special events (ex. Tie-Dye Tuesday, Wash-Out Wednesday).


 

Key Responsibilities (Education-Focused)


 

Teaching & Instruction

• Teach or assist in daily instructional sessions using age-appropriate strategies

• Practice classroom and behavior management with youth ages 11–17

• Deliver lessons aligned with educational best practices

• Adapt instruction for different learning styles and abilities


 

Lesson Planning & Curriculum Development

• Write daily & weekly lesson plans

• Prepare materials, tools, and activity supplies

• Create hands-on, experiential learning opportunities

• Maintain organized instructional spaces


 

Learner Engagement & Assessment

• Guide Scouts through projects and skill learning

• Scaffold learning to support success

• Track participant progress

• Encourage creativity and confidence


 

Professional Collaboration

• Work alongside instructors and directors in a team-based environment

• Participate in co-teaching opportunities

• Communicate professionally with staff and youth


 

Program Area Operations

• Maintain safe, positive learning environments

• Enforce safety rules and Scouting America policies

• Set up and take down teaching areas daily

• Organize tools and teaching materials


 

Qualifications & Requirements

• Education major or related field preferred

• Minimum age 16

• Strong communication and leadership skills

• Creativity, adaptability, and enthusiasm for teaching youth

• Ability to work indoors and outdoors

• First Aid/CPR available at camp

• Commitment to Scouting America’s mission


 

General Camp Responsibilities

• Assist with meal serving in the dining hall

• Participate in bathhouse cleaning and campsite upkeep

• Attend daily flag ceremonies and assemblies

• Support campfire programs and evening activities

• Serve as a positive role model


 

Work Environment

Interns teach in lively, youth-centered program areas indoors and outdoors. Roles involve leading activities, demonstrating skills, preparing materials, and collaborating with staff and campers. Housing and meals are provided on site.
