Water Wastewater Operator Intern
General Overview
The Water/Wastewater Operator Intern supports the daily operation and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater treatment systems under the guidance of licensed operators. This internship provides hands-on exposure to treatment processes, system monitoring, sampling, and regulatory compliance activities. The intern assists with routine inspections, data collection, and basic maintenance tasks while gaining practical experience in safe operations, environmental stewardship, and public health protection.
The Water/Wastewater Operator Intern reports directly to the Operations Manager.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Assist licensed operators with daily operation of water and wastewater treatment facilities
- Observe and support routine inspections of equipment, pumps, tanks, valves, and pipelines
- Collect water and wastewater samples for testing and analysis under supervision
- Assist with basic laboratory testing and data recording
- Help maintain accurate operational logs, reports, and compliance documentation
- Support preventive maintenance activities such as cleaning, flushing, and minor repairs
- Follow established safety procedures, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Participate in training sessions, safety meetings, and emergency response drills
Skills/Knowledge
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in environmental science, engineering, water resources, biology, chemistry, or a related field preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Interest in water/wastewater operations, environmental science, engineering, or public utilities
- Willingness to learn and follow instructions from licensed operators and supervisors
- Basic mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and compliance
Physical Requirements – Work Environment
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs or ladders
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to work in industrial or utility environments
- Work performed in treatment plants, pump stations, laboratories, and outdoor facilities
- Exposure to water, wastewater, chemicals, noise, and mechanical equipment
- Use of PPE required at all times in designated areas
- Schedule may include daytime hours with occasional extended hours for training or special projects
Daily Work Location/Hours
This position requires flexibility in office location and scheduled hours, as well as assuming a role in fieldwork. Remote work will be common, and location will change dependent on the workload. In cases of severe weather, illness, or unique circumstances, remote work hours must be previously discussed and approved by the immediate supervisor.
