Arts Center Internship Opportunities: Exhibitions, Workshops, Events, Performances, Marketing, and Pottery positions available
View Arts Center offers a ten-week summer internship program for college students and recent grads interested in gaining on the ground experience in a busy nonprofit arts center. Internships will run for 10 weeks from June 15 - August 14 and will be offered in multiple program areas: Ceramics/Pottery; Community Arts; Performing Arts; Visual Arts and Exhibitions; Marketing; and Special Events. Interns are paid a bi-weekly stipend of $175/week and housing is provided. All positions are full-time (40 hrs/wk), including some weekend and evening hours. Interns will apply and work in their specified programs, but work will cross into all areas of View's programming on occasion. View interns may also attend workshops, events, and performances free of charge, on a space available basis.
While each program has specific qualifications, all successful candidates will demonstrate a willingness to learn, flexibility and adaptability, creative problem solving, and the capacity to work well both collaboratively and independently. Interns will be working primarily with their specified program manager, but will be expected to help with other programming occasionally throughout the building.
Intern Position Summaries
Ceramics/Pottery:
View’s Pottery Internship program is geared towards college students with a focus on ceramics, recent ceramics graduates, as well as ceramic artists who are interested in working in a state-of-the-art community pottery studio, teaching, furthering their ceramics education, gaining knowledge in operating ceramic equipment, and learning about the operations of running a community pottery studio. The internship program provides students with experience in the nonprofit sector as part of a supportive educational community.
A large portion of the Pottery Intern’s learning, skills and/or experience includes operational and administrative support for maintaining and managing studio equipment, materials and supplies for ceramics and other related mediums used in the workshop facility at View.
The Pottery Intern will help ensure materials and supplies are stocked, organized, maintained and cleaned so that the pottery studio is clean and classes are efficient and effectively run. Help manage the firing process and all related ceramics process steps. Pottery Intern will work directly with and report to the Pottery Studio Manager.
All interns will frequently collaborate with other areas of the Arts Center to assist in planning, set-up and execution of some events, workshops and performances.

Community Arts/Workshops
The View Community Arts Intern plays a vital role in the implementation of View’s summer Community Arts programming. The intern will work with the Community Arts Program Coordinator to implement workshops throughout the summer, help with View's Daily Drop-In Family Crafts, and help plan/develop future programs. Teaching opportunities may also be available to interns with the proper skillsets.
Primary Responsibilities will include:
- Maintain a clean and safe community art studio.
- Assist in organization and administration of scheduled art classes.
- Set up and break down for each class.
- Lead in implementation and instruction of daily summer drop-ins for children and adults (5 days a week).
- Assist in any follow up for daily drop ins, including assisting with the glazing and firing of paint on pottery, distributing completed artwork, etc.
- Assist in marketing via writing press releases and creating marketing materials. Working alongside the marketing team, come up with creative marketing ideas to serve the classes and daily drop ins.
Ideal Qualifications:
- Strong art and crafting background.
- Experience teaching and/or working with youth is preferred.
- Knowledge of Adobe InDesign or other design software preferred.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Ability to effectively present information via written and oral presentation.
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Events
The Events Internship is a perfect way to gain skills and knowledge in community and special events planning. The skills developed over the course of the Summer will be able to be applied in any type of setting or used to build their own business. This internship is an opportunity to gain hands-on professional experience in planning, executing, and participating in a range of social events; such as weddings, fundraising events, gallery receptions, View's Craft Fair and annual Gala, and more. Tasks will include planning, promoting, logistics, member relations, day-of support, and post-review discussions. This internship requires a strong attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to adjust to changes in events and ability to effectively communicate.
Having a creative background and basic knowledge of the Adobe Suite, Canva etc. is preferred to help with marketing and promotion of events. Interns will also be expected to participate in weekly staff meetings and brainstorming sessions to learn the valuable lesson of sharing ideas and working with a team in a collaborative environment. It is expected that the intern dresses professionally and attends events on weeknights and weekends as needed.
Specific Duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Review contracts received from vendors and facility rentals
- Design and create marketing materials for a variety of events
- Social media planning, posting, scheduling
- Communicating with team members, patrons, guests, clients and vendors
- Stock kitchen supplies as needed and work with caterers when they arrive for an event
- Set up for events and facility rentals. Provide floor plans to the facility manager. Decorate for events as needed, especially the Gala
- Working with a team
- Request volunteers for events using View’s Volunteer Request Process
- Input data into Google Sheets, Docs and other Google applications
- Attend and participate in planning meetings
- Problem solving as needed
- Help to ensure all necessary details and plans are in place for events and facility rentals

Marketing
From print and digital advertising to social media and video, a Marketing Internship at View will give an in-depth, hands-on learning experience in a variety of mediums. Interns will be tasked and challenged every day to come up with new materials to promote View and everything it has to offer: musical and theatrical performances, art gallery exhibitions, events, workshops, fundraisers, raffles, and more.
While working directly with the Marketing Manager, interns will also gain experience collaborating with other programs at View to create and distribute materials such as posters, print and digital ads, produce a weekly e-newsletter, rack cards, postcards, shooting and editing promotional photos and videos, writing press releases, maintaining parts of the website, and keeping active social media accounts.
Interns will work extensively in the G Suite and the Adobe Suite, using InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere most often. All materials produced will be evaluated by the Marketing Manager to ensure an appropriate mix of creativity and functionality. Interns will also be able to view the analytics of all digital materials to see how the public is responding to their work.
Marketing interns will quickly learn time management skills, as well as how to maintain multiple projects at once, and how to work quickly without sacrificing creativity or accuracy.

Exhibitions & Visual Arts
The Visual Arts and Exhibitions Internship at View Arts Center offers hands-on training in professional gallery practices. Working with the Visual Arts Coordinator, Interns will gain experience across exhibition planning, art handling, gallery maintenance, artist liaison work, and design work. This internship equips participants with practical experience and professional skills to pursue careers in the art and gallery industry. Interns will leave with confidence in their ability to manage exhibitions, communicate with artists and audiences, and contribute meaningfully to art institutions.
Interns will assist in the following areas:
- Exhibition Planning
- Communicating with exhibiting artists, organizing files and administrative materials, and assisting with receptions, artist talks, and future programming
- Exhibition Marketing (in collaboration with the Marketing Team)
- Assisting with press releases, social media content, gallery guides, and the creation of the annual Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolor (ANEAW) catalog
- Exhibition Design & Presentation
- Assisting with layout of walls, pedestals, and artwork, cutting signage and labels, assisting in vinyl installation
- Art Handling & Gallery Maintenance
- Check-in/check-out, installation and deinstallation, preparing artwork for safe shipping, and maintaining gallery spaces through cleaning, dusting, and general upkeep
- Artist Liaison & Public Communications
- Communicate directly with artists, judges, and jurors, greet visitors and assists art buyers, and monitoring gallery spaces in public-facing roles

Performing Arts
The Performing Arts Intern will assist the Performing Arts Manager to ensure the Summer slate of performances and shows run as smoothly as possible.
While the structure of the internship is a 5 day/40-hour work week, the nature of the position means that the intern will be expected to work some nights and weekends.
Responsibilities
- Assist in set up of each performance, including set up of seating, curtains, and audio and lighting equipment.
- Assist in load in and running for each performance. This can include serving as Stage and House Manager as well as lighting and audio board technician, depending on experience.
- Assist in marketing via social media and creating and distributing marketing materials. Work alongside the marketing team to come up with creative marketing ideas to serve the performances.
- Creation of Playbills (on Canva) for performances.
- Assist in the implementation of contracts and riders by fulfilling technical and hospitality needs. This may include booking hotel reservations, ordering and delivering food, cleaning the performance space and green room, creating day-of schedules, and assisting backstage.
- Interacting with patrons.
- Assist with the implementation and facilitation of the children’s theatre day-camp.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of technical theatre (sound and lighting equipment)/tech theatre major preferred
