Programs And Communications Coordinator

Programs and Communications Coordinator

Full-Time

About the Position

Organizations representing the Michigan asparagus industry, the Michigan carrot industry, and Michigan fruit and vegetable processors are seeking a Programs and Communications Coordinator to join a small, high-impact team. This position supports multiple agriculture and food industry organizations focused on improving grower profitability, advancing applied research, and helping processors succeed.

This is an entry-level, hands-on role with training and mentorship provided. The Coordinator will work directly with the Executive Director, gain experience in communications, programs, and industry outreach, and play a meaningful role in supporting Michigan’s specialty crop and food processing sectors.

Communications, Marketing & Outreach

Communications and outreach are a central part of this role. Responsibilities include:

  • Creating and posting content for LinkedIn and Facebook
  • Writing original social media content from guidance and direction
  • Repurposing research, events, media coverage, and industry updates into clear, engaging posts
  • Creating basic graphics and short videos (e.g., using Canva or similar tools)
  • Posting content and monitoring engagement and comments
  • Assisting with website upkeep, including posting updates and event information
  • Helping promote meetings, field days, research activities, and industry initiatives

Strong writing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly with diverse audiences are essential.

Programs, Events & Board Support

The Coordinator will support programs and governance activities across multiple organizations, including:

  • Assisting with board and committee meetings, such as:
    • Drafting agendas
    • Preparing board materials
    • Taking and organizing meeting minutes
    • Coordinating meeting logistics
  • Supporting field days and events, including topic planning, logistics, and materials
  • Attending field days and events hosted by partner organizations
  • Assisting with applied research activities by organizing information and communications

Initially, the Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director. Over time, the role is expected to operate more independently while keeping leadership informed.

Operations & Administrative Support

As with any small, mission-driven organization, this role includes some administrative and operational tasks that support the work of the office. These tasks are not the focus of the position, but are part of keeping programs running smoothly.

Examples include:

  • Opening mail and scanning bills and invoices for the bookkeeper
  • Preparing and mailing board meeting packets
  • Answering occasional phone calls
  • Coordinating meeting logistics
  • Helping manage contact lists and databases

This is not an administrative assistant role. The organization is seeking someone who thinks ahead, writes well, communicates clearly, and anticipates needs, while understanding that administrative tasks are part of working in a small, hands-on office.

Who Should Apply

This position is well-suited for:

  • Recent graduates or early-career professionals
  • Candidates interested in communications, agriculture, food systems, nonprofit work, or industry associations
  • Individuals who enjoy variety and responsibility rather than narrow or repetitive tasks
  • Strong writers and communicators who are organized, reliable, and curious

A background in food or agriculture is helpful but not required.

Technical & Digital Skills

Candidates should be comfortable using common office, communications, and collaboration tools, including:

  • Email, calendars, and scheduling tools (e.g., Outlook)
  • Document, spreadsheet, and presentation software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Content and file organization tools
  • Basic data and contact management tools (e.g., Excel, Airtable, or similar)
  • Simple design and multimedia tools (e.g., Canva or similar)

Prior experience is helpful, but training and support will be provided.

What Makes This Role Unique

  • Direct collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Exposure to growers, processors, researchers, and policymakers
  • Meaningful responsibility early in your career
  • Opportunities to build skills in communications, program coordination, event planning, and applied research support
  • Work that is visible and has a tangible impact
