Managing Editior, Hometown Weekly Newspapers
We are seeking a full-time Editor to oversee day-to-day editorial operations across multiple community newspapers out of our Medfield office location. This role is focused on content, editing, planning, and execution.
About the Role
This position is ideal for an early-career journalist or editor with some journalism experience who is ready to take ownership and grow quickly in a small, fast-moving operation.
You will be responsible for ensuring consistent, accurate, on-deadline local coverage across several neighboring towns. You must be organized, reliable, and comfortable making decisions.
Responsibilities
- Manage the weekly editorial cycle for multiple local newspapers
- Assign, edit, and occasionally write stories covering:
- Local government and town meetings
- Schools and education
- Public safety
- Business and community organizations
- Events and features
- Edit all copy for accuracy, clarity, grammar, and AP style
- Work with freelance writers and contributors
- Coordinate coverage planning and editorial calendars
- Deliver clean, complete copy to the design team on deadline
- Publish stories to our website and handle basic digital updates
- Attend occasional night meetings and weekend events as required by community news coverage
- Serve as a professional editorial point of contact in the communities we cover
Qualifications
Required:
- Strong writing and editing skills with solid grammar and AP style knowledge
- Prior journalism experience (community newspapers, internships, student publications, or equivalent)
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines independently
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Professional communication skills and sound news judgment
Preferred (not required):
- Experience covering local or municipal news
- Familiarity with basic web publishingÂ
- Photography or multimedia experience is a plus
