This position is responsible for assisting with basic construction tasks and supporting the project manager or lead engineer. They may also be involved in preparing rough sketches, cost estimates, and specifications.

 

This position reports to the Senior Engineer.

Essential Job Responsibilities 

 

  • Prepares rough sketches and details from verbal instructions.
  • Assists with basic construction cost estimates including such tasks as gathering cost information from suppliers and catalogs.
  • Assists with basic quantity take-offs including such tasks as counting patterned items.
  • Performs basic field investigations, as directed, including such tasks as measuring/counting/inventorying existing site conditions and subsurface investigations. Field investigations involve the ability to physically move about the site.
  • Performs basic drawing reviews, as directed.  This includes such tasks as:  checking and marking up individual drawings.
  • Performs basic project documentation.  This includes such tasks as filing drawings, correspondence, and project files.
  • Performs basic data collection including such tasks as:  gathering published information from the library or manufacturer's literature; locating topographical and utility information/maps (water, sewer, electric, etc.); and utilizing standard forms for reporting information.
  • Performs basic construction observations/inspections.  This includes such tasks as recording and reporting the construction and installation of standard patterned items.  Also assists with complex tasks such as recording and reporting of construction/ installation of non-patterned items. Involves site visits and moving about the site while construction is in progress.
  • Assists with basic design including such tasks as calculations, consideration of construction techniques, and utilizing computer data and research techniques.
  • Performs, as directed, preparation of basic permits.  This includes such tasks as completing standard forms for state, federal and local permits.
  • Prepares, as directed, basic specifications and reports including such tasks as gathering, editing and formatting information from manufacturers, codes and standard specifications; checking that items mentioned on plans appear in specifications and reports; and checking the layout and accuracy of indexing of the bid book and report.
  • Works with others as a member of a project team and as required, assists the Project Manager or Lead Engineer with basic tasks.
  • Responsible for bringing assigned project tasks in on schedule and within budget.
  • Makes every effort to meet or exceed assigned utilization goal.
  • Works with supervisor to maintain good client relations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • May occasionally be required to perform sump pump, manhole inspections, or similar field work.
  • May be required to attend client meetings.
  • Performs, as directed, basic external communication tasks such as making telephone calls and writing letters to clients, officials, etc.
  • Works with supervisor to maintain good client relations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Knowledge

 

  • Graduate of a four-year college program in engineering.
  • Knowledge of basic engineering design and construction principles.
  • Ability to carry out a sequence of engineering tasks in conjunction with other staff members and function as a team member.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to adapt to change.

Physical Requirements – Work Environment

 

  • Ability to sit/stand, sometimes for long periods of time. 
  • Ability to occasionally travel from one location to another. 
  • Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force. Occasionally, performs medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force (ex. Lifting exhibits, boxes)
  • Ability to operate a laptop or PC and/or any other general office equipment
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. (Office with computers/printers and light traffic)
  • Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. 
  • Required to have visual acuity to operate a motor vehicle.
