South Dakota Art Museum – Paid Summer Internship Program

Position Type: Part-time
Duration: 15 weeks, 20 hours per week (schedule & exact dates negotiable)
Compensation: $14.00 per hour
Location: Brookings, SD (on-site)

Position Overview

The South Dakota Art Museum (SDAM) is seeking a creative and organized Marketing Intern to support the museum’s marketing and communications efforts. This paid internship offers hands-on experience in digital marketing, content creation, and brand management within a cultural nonprofit environment, and is ideal for students interested in marketing, communications, graphic design, journalism, or related fields.

The intern will work closely with the Marketing and Communications Coordinator to help tell the museum’s story through engaging content across social media, web, and email platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with social media marketing, including content creation, scheduling, and basic analytics tracking
  • Support website updates, email marketing campaigns, and community calendar listings
  • Create visual and video content using graphic design and basic video editing tools
  • Apply SDAM branding consistently across all marketing materials
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills by managing multiple projects, timelines, and deadlines
  • Assist with additional marketing and communications projects as assigned

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

All applicants who are college juniors or seniors, enrolled in graduate programs, or have recently graduated are eligible to apply. Interns are responsible for arranging academic credit with their sponsoring institutions, if applicable.

SDAM seeks applications from undergraduate juniors and seniors and recent graduates majoring in Marketing, Graphic Design, Journalism, Communications, Visual Arts, Museum Studies, and related fields, as well as those interested in pursuing a career in museum marketing or communications.

Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience or coursework in marketing, communications, graphic design, or related fields
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and content creation tools
  • Basic skills in graphic design and video editing software preferred
  • Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Interest in arts marketing and nonprofit communications

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the internship, the Marketing Intern will have gained practical experience in museum marketing strategy, content development, brand management, and digital communications—providing a strong foundation for future work in marketing and communications.
