The Data Governance Intern will support enterprise-wide initiatives focused on data governance, data cataloging, data quality, and data democratization. The intern would be working under the guidance of the Enterprise Data Governance Analyst, and collaborating with technical subject matter experts to support initiatives that improve data governance, data cataloging, data quality, and data democratization across Farmer Mac. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in documenting and maintaining governance policies, standards, and workflows.
  • Support onboarding of data assets into the data catalog (OvalEdge).
    Curate and tag reports for improved discoverability and compliance.
  • Participate in mapping data lineage and entity relationships across systems.
  • Help define and validate data quality rules for critical data elements.
    Contribute to dashboards and reports using Power BI to visualize governance metrics.
  • Research best practices for data democratization and self-service analytics.
  • Attend governance working group meetings and provide notes/action items.
     

The ideal candidate is curious and detail-oriented and has a passion for data governance and data ethics. The candidate is comfortable working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and should be a self-starter who can manage tasks independently under guidance.

The People You Will Work With

The position will report to the Enterprise Data Governance Analyst and work with other members of the Enterprise Risk Management team, Information Technology team, and other stakeholders throughout the enterprise.

Where and When You Will Work

The position will be hybrid and some office presence might be required. We are a Presence with a Purpose work environment, which allows for flexibility of work location while providing the opportunity for teams to come together in the office with purpose. In general, during the summer, you must complete at least 20 hours and no more than 32 hours.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
  • Familiarity with data governance concepts (metadata, lineage, stewardship).
    Exposure to data visualization tools (Power BI preferred).
  • Ability to identify and analyze data quality issues.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Awareness of compliance frameworks (SOC2, FFIEC, SOX).
  • Familiarity with Agile methodology and project management basics.
     

Education and Experience

  • Rising junior in Fall 2026 who is pursuing a degree in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.3.
     

The hourly pay for an undergraduate in Washington, D.C. area would be $18/hourly pay for a graduate-level student would be $22.
