Part-Time Debate Coach

Part-Time Debate Coach (Mondays & Wednesdays Required)
Edge Up | Jersey City, NJ

Edge Up is a Jersey City–based enrichment program that helps elementary and middle school students build confidence, communication skills, and critical thinking through public speaking and debate. Our classes are structured, supportive, and intentionally designed for kids — rigorous but welcoming.

We are hiring a part-time Debate Coach to support and eventually lead debate classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. This role exists to strengthen coverage on our busiest teaching days and is ideal for someone who enjoys mentoring students, leading small groups, and teaching within a clear framework.

This is not a competitive tournament coaching role and not a curriculum-design position. Training and lesson structure are provided.

Schedule (Non-Negotiable Requirement)
• Mondays: after-school hours
• Wednesdays: after-school / early evening
• Weekly commitment through the semester

Please apply only if you are consistently available on both Mondays and Wednesdays.

Responsibilities
• Lead or co-lead debate classes (ages ~7–12)
• Teach students how to make clear claims, give reasons, and respond respectfully
• Maintain a calm, structured, and encouraging classroom
• Follow Edge Up’s debate framework and lesson flow
• Participate in a short paid shadowing/onboarding period

This Role Does NOT Include
• Curriculum creation
• Parent communication
• Student recruitment
• Tournament travel or coaching

We value clarity, consistency, and reliability more than debate accolades.

Ideal Candidate
You may be a great fit if you have experience with debate, Model UN, mock trial, or public speaking, and if you enjoy working with children in a teaching, tutoring, or mentoring capacity.

Students or recent graduates in Political Science, Pre-Law, Communications, Education, International Relations, or related fields are encouraged to apply. All majors welcome.

Compensation
• $40–45 per class, based on experience
• Paid training / shadowing period

Commitment & Hiring Process
• Short paid trial period to ensure fit on both sides
• Semester-based commitment preferred
• Background check required

How to Apply
Please include:

A brief introduction

Relevant experience working with kids and/or debate

Explicit confirmation that you can commit to Mondays and Wednesdays for the full semester

Applications without Monday/Wednesday confirmation may not be considered.
