Drama Specialist Stage Director- Apachi Day Camp (Evanston)

The Drama Specialist / Stage Director plays a key role in bringing storytelling and performance to life at camp. This position is responsible for directing two camp theatrical productions over the course of the summer, guiding campers through rehearsals and performances while fostering confidence, teamwork, and creative expression. Our goal is simple: if campers never want rehearsal to end, can’t wait to perform, and feel proud of who they are on and off the stage, we’ve done our job.
JCC Chicago is seeking a passionate and organized individual with experience in theater, drama, or stage direction who is excited to work with children in a joyful, camp-centered environment.
Key Dates:
Employee Orientation: June 8– 12, 2025 (Times TBD)
Camp Dates: June 15 – July 31, 2026 (No camp on June 19 & July 3)
Camp Hours: 8:30 AM – 3:45 PM daily, with two evening events (dates TBD)
Key Responsibilities:
· Direct two age-appropriate theatrical productions, including casting, blocking, staging, and performance preparation
· Plan and lead engaging rehearsals that balance structure, creativity, and fun
· Create an inclusive, supportive environment where campers of all experience levels feel comfortable performing
· Incorporate camp values, traditions, and community-building into rehearsals and performances
· Collaborate with Unit Heads, counselors, and camp leadership to coordinate schedules and camper support
· Support needs related to scripts, costumes, props, and set pieces in partnership with camp leadership
· Clearly communicate expectations and directions to campers in an age-appropriate and encouraging way
· Maintain a safe, organized rehearsal and performance space
· Foster teamwork, confidence, self-expression, and positive peer relationships among campers
· Recognize and address inappropriate behavior using positive behavior management strategies
· Demonstrate high energy, enthusiasm, flexibility, and professionalism throughout the camp season
· React quickly and remain mentally alert in emergency situations, ensuring camper safety
· Demonstrate physical stamina, including standing for long periods and moving materials as needed
· Perform additional duties as needed to ensure the camp runs smoothly
Qualifications:
· College degree (preferred).
· Experience in camping, teaching, or a related field.
· Supervisory experience (highly preferred).
· Passion for working with and mentoring children.
· Strong communication skills with the ability to lead and guide fellow staff members.
· Specialized skills and the ability to teach these skills to campers.
· Ability to create and implement daily lesson plans and special programs.
· Team-oriented with a positive attitude and a desire to create an inclusive, welcoming camp environment.
Compensation:
JCC Apachi Day Camp offers competitive pay, bonus opportunities, and a fun, supportive work environment. This is a stipend position, with pay varying based on experience and location.
