Music Director Job Description

Position Summary:

The Director of Music is a part-time position requiring an average of eight hours per week.  The Director of Music will work collaboratively with the Pastor and the Worship and Music Committee to enhance the worship experience and encourage spiritual growth of the assembly and those participating directly in the ministry of music.  The Director of Music will apply the knowledge of music and music performance to the overall mission of the church in worship and educational programming.

 

Reports To:

Music Director reports to the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church and through the pastor to Trinity Lutheran Congregation Council. 

An annual performance review will be conducted by the Pastor. The pastor will then provide a report to the Congregation Council.  Performance reviews will be conducted by approximately June each calendar year to coincide with program year goal setting.

  1. Ability to work as part of a team, and to lead and inspire volunteers in a unified direction, maintaining a positive outlook towards the organization and others.
  2. Ability to communicate faith and love for Jesus Christ in Music Ministry.
  3. Commitment to seeing music as a ministry of spiritual growth and development.
  4. Appropriate musical education/training and/or professional experience.
  5. Significant skills in choral leadership, and the selection of appropriate music.
  6. Demonstrated leadership qualities in recruitment, program coordination, and administration.
  7. Ability to make a creative contribution to the total church program.
  8. Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people of all ages.
  9. Ability to access networks to recruit/procure additional musicians as necessary.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Provide vision and strategic planning for vibrant worship experiences with a variety of music opportunities/spirited expression.
  2. Collaborate with the pastor and worship and music committee to plan seasonal and special worship services.
  3. Coordinate Sunday service musician (organist/pianist/other). Ensure that musicians are receiving the Sunday Bulletin and any other necessary resources to assist them in preparation, and preview worship service with Sunday Musician prior to the start of the service.
  4. Work with the office manager to ensure appropriate usage licensing/reporting for  music being copied or performed.
  5. Communicate all music ministry information to the church office in a timely fashion for bulletin preparation. 
  6. Direct choir in weekly rehearsals and worship services, as well as recruit new membership and provide instructional leadership.  Direct handbell ensemble for special services (ie Christmas and Easter)
  7. Foster active participation of the congregation during worship services.
  8. Select congregational hymns for weekly and special worship services in consultation with Pastor.
  9. Supervise the use of and maintain an inventory of church musical instruments, and arrange for the repair and tuning of these instruments.
  10. Utilize the current extensive music library in creative ways.  
  11. Provide visible and accessible presence to the congregation. 
  12. Administer good stewardship of the music budget. Submit payroll information.
  13. Coordinate the hiring of additional musicians as needed (section leaders, instrumentalists, etc.) and provide them with resources necessary for rehearsal.


 

Other duties as assigned:

  1. Occasionally, additional tasks may be assigned by the Pastor or Council, these additional tasks will be considered secondary to the primary tasks listed above and will be tasks expected to be completed only if time permits.
  2. This position is a 8 hour a week job.
  3. Any tasks not able to be completed within the normal 8 hour schedule, must be communicated to Pastor to determine how these tasks will be accomplished.
