The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (LACSD) is a public agency dedicated to providing wastewater and solid waste management services throughout Los Angeles County. With a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and public health, LACSD plays a critical role in maintaining regional infrastructure and ensuring the efficient, responsible management of waste.
In this role, you will gain hands-on experience working closely with experienced Environmental Scientists, Engineers, and other professionals on wastewater treatment data collection and analyses, environmental monitoring studies, and reporting activities. You may also have the opportunity to gain exposure to specialized field observation and environmental monitoring techniques. Candidates should possess strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills, as well as strong attention to detail, as this position plays a vital role in supporting the Environmental Sciences team.
This paid internship offers hands-on experience in the field of Environmental Science, along with mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals. Interns will gain exposure to conducting environmental studies and assessing their significance to various facilities and operations, with potential opportunities for future career advancement within the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts.
Responsibilities may include:
- Assisting with scientific research and environmental monitoring studies as well as environmental impact assessments
- Supporting the development and implementation of data collection methods
- Analyzing wastewater treatment and environmental monitoring program data
- Assisting with marine biology studies and laboratory research projects, as applicable
- Collecting water or other environmental samples and conducting field monitoring tests
- Supporting field monitoring activities related to wastewater treatment and environmental compliance
- Tracking and summarizing legislative, regulatory, and research updates related to water and environmental topics
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Eligibility:
- Maintain student status through summer or fall enrollment at an accredited college or university in a program with an emphasis in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science or other relevant field;
- Be available to work full time for at least twelve weeks during normal business hours in the summer (Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m - 3:30 p.m.);
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0;
- Possess a valid California Class C driver license (or an equivalent driver's license issued by a state or territory within the United States).

Only online applications will be accepted. A resume may be submitted but will not be accepted in place of a completed application. Most positions are based in Whittier, with some positions in Carson and Compton. Applications may be accepted until all positions are filled.
The selection process will begin with a review of applications to ensure candidates meet the minimum qualifications. The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process.
Interviews are expected to begin in January/February 2026 and will continue periodically until all positions are filled. Notifications of placement are anticipated in March/April.
All recommended candidates must successfully complete a background process, which includes submitting official transcripts, completing a conviction questionnaire, review of DMV records, and a pre-employment drug screening.
