The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (LACSD) offers a paid, full-time summer internship for college students interested in public policy, legislation, and environmental protection. This opportunity provides hands-on experience supporting legislative and regulatory efforts that directly impact public health, environmental protection, and essential public infrastructure.

This internship is designed for students who are curious about how laws and regulations are developed, interpreted, and applied in the public sector. LACSD is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to support the Districts’ legislative and regulatory program while building foundational skills in research, analysis, and professional communication.  

In this role, the intern will assist with tracking, reviewing, and analyzing complex state and federal legislative and regulatory matters and will help communicate findings clearly and professionally to staff and leadership. As a Legislative and Regulatory Student Worker, you will gain real-world exposure to policy analysis while working alongside experienced professionals and supporting projects that influence how public agencies respond to legislation and regulations affecting the Districts’ operations and long-term planning.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Organizing one to two tours for legislative office interns and staff at state and federal district offices
  • Conducting research and tracking state and federal legislation using computerized databases
  • Reviewing legislation and input and analyses from District staff and legal counsel
  • Reading, analyzing, and summarizing bills, policy committee analyses, and Floor activities
  • Watching and summarizing online policy committee and public hearings
  • Attending committee meetings, public hearings, technical meetings, and legislative briefings as appropriate
  • Participating in workgroups or committees charged with reviewing legislation and/or regulations
  • Assisting with writing position letters and memos on policy topics relevant to the Districts’ interests
  • Supporting the Districts’ state legislative program through additional research and analysis assignments, as needed


 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Eligibility:

  1. Must be enrolled as a Bachelor’s or Master’s student at an accredited college or university and maintain student status through the summer or fall term;
  2. Coursework or academic focus in political science, public policy, public administration, government, politics, environmental policy, environmental science, or pre-law is preferred but not required;
  3. Be available to work full time for at least twelve weeks during normal business hours in the summer (Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m - 4:00 p.m.);
  4. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0;
  5. Possess a valid California Class C driver license (or an equivalent driver's license issued by a state or territory within the United States).

Application Process:

 

Only online applications will be accepted. A resume may be submitted but will not be accepted in place of a completed application. Applications may be accepted until all positions are filled.

The selection process will begin with a review of applications to ensure candidates meet the minimum qualifications.  The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process.

Interviews are expected to begin in January/February 2026 and will continue periodically until all positions are filled. Notifications of placement are anticipated in March/April.

All recommended candidates must successfully complete a background process, which includes submitting official transcripts, completing a conviction questionnaire, review of DMV records, and a pre-employment drug screening.
