Academic (Afterschool) Tutor
JOB SUMMARY
Academic Coach/Tutors work in our after-school program providing academic support and enrichment to K-8 students. Duties include facilitating age-appropriate lesson plans for students with different abilities, teaching social skills through guided activities, and assessing each student's academic progress.
This position requires working on-site at an assigned school on the southside of Chicago. (e.g., Bronzeville, Hyde Park, South Shore, Chatham).
Time needed 3pm to 5pm.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic coaches work with individuals or small groups of students to improve academic performance, especially in reading and math. Responsibilities include:
Academic Instruction:
- Work with small groups in a given classroom, ensuring safety and care of all children at all times
- Teach reading, math, and grammar skills to K-8 students
- Facilitate and deliver weekly lesson plans in accordance with CTC's and partner school's curriculum
- Use edu-tech games, music, edu-films, books, software applications, or other learning tools to teach basic educational and social skills
- Maintain records of grades or performance and discuss progress with the site leader
- Collaborate with staff and partners to determine student needs and develop tutoring plans
Student Support & Engagement:
- Provide support and encouragement to help students build confidence, motivation, and self-awareness to nurture growth mindset
- Monitor and observe children's interactions in peer activities
- Enhance self-esteem and confidence in students by practicing patience
- Model excitement about learning
- Distribute snacks and other materials as necessary during transitional times
Administrative & Team Collaboration:
- Check and respond to emails daily and regularly consult with your Site Director
- Keep record of student attendance, learning plans, activities, and progress
- Work closely with administration, staff, and other tutors
- Participate in weekly observation and feedback sessions with your Site Director for professional development and growth
- Lead students in cleanup as needed including sanitizing classroom equipment
Physical Demands:
- Ability to climb stairs and ramps occasionally during shifts, often while escorting children
- Standing, sitting, squatting, bending, twisting, walking, and moving at a fast pace
- Able to lift 30 lbs
QUALIFICATIONS
For this position, we are seeking individuals who are engaging, reliable, consistent, respectful, and patient while working with children.
- Relevant degree or coursework in education, math, reading, or ELA areas OR previous tutoring or teaching experience
- Experience working with children in K-12 educational settings
- Teaching certification or education credentials (preferred)
- Training in learning disabilities or special needs (preferred)
- Ability to multitask and show initiative
- Punctual and reliable with consistent availability for the entire January-May program period
REQUIREMENTS
- Must complete and pass background check and fingerprinting
- Reliable transportation to assigned school site on southside of Chicago
- Effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Fluency in spoken Spanish (not required but a plus)
- Computer literate with skills in MS Office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
- Access to technology such as a laptop or desktop computer with camera capability and stable Wi-Fi connection (for planning and communication purposes)
PHONE POLICY: Staff members are required to refrain from using personal phones/technology for non-work-related purposes during working hours. Staff should remain focused and dedicated to their responsibilities and deliver optimal productivity.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS: Must successfully pass all background screenings and consent to fingerprinting. Saga Education high impact tutor certification preferred.
