Adaptive Specialty Instructor SUMMER 2026

Program Overview


JCC Brooklyn Camp for Children Who Are Blind or Have Low Vision serves children and teens ages 4–17, providing a fully inclusive,
hands-on summer camp experience for campers with visual impairments and additional disabilities. 

The program emphasizes


Independence, creativity, physical confidence, sensory engagement, and functional life skills in a supportive, joyful camp environment.
Position Summary
Adaptive Specialty Instructors design and lead engaging, accessible specialty classes using hands-on, sensory-based, and experiential
teaching methods. Instructors collaborate closely with counselors and camp leadership and model inclusive instructional strategies for
staff while supporting a written, accessible curriculum.


Specialty Areas May Include (but are not limited to):


- Sports / Adaptive PE – Gym and movement classes using verbal cueing and tactile modeling
- Art (Clay & Sensory) – Tactile, process-based art experiences
- Computer / Technology – Screen readers, magnification, accessible software
- Music – Rhythm, sound exploration, group music-making
- Martial Arts – Balance, coordination, body awareness
- Gymnastics / Movement – Strength, flexibility, spatial awareness
- Cooking & Functional Skills – Cooking, camp store, café simulations, menu planning


Key Responsibilities


- Lead daily specialty sessions adapted for blind and low-vision campers
- Adjust activities for age, ability, and support needs
- Use tactile, auditory, and experiential teaching strategies
- Collaborate with counselors to ensure safety and engagement
- Model inclusive teaching practices and maintain clear routines
- Promote independence, confidence, and skill-building


Qualifications


Required:
- Experience working with children with disabilities (blind/low vision preferred)
- Background in at least one specialty area
- Hands-on, sensory-based teaching approach
- Strong communication skills and flexibility
Preferred:


- Experience with blind or low-vision campers
- Training in special education, adaptive PE, OT, art, or music
- Experience with adapted curricula or camp programs
