Position Title: Interpretation Steward – AmeriCorps

# of Opportunities: 3

Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements

Site Location: Interpretation, Grand Teton National Park, Moose, WY 83012

 Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: May 18, 2026
  • End Date: September 4, 2026
  • Length of Service: 16-Week Position
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 450 Hours

 Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career internship opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Grand Teton National Park will host a Interpretation Steward.

This Interpretation Steward is an AmeriCorps position. Interpretation Stewards in Grand Teton National Park will serve in one of three districts: Colter Bay, Jenny Lake, or the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve. Stewards deal directly with park visitors answering questions at visitor centers, providing trip planning help at an information desk, researching, preparing and presenting short, guided walks and talks, presenting evening campfire talks, leading children's programs, providing information to individuals on trails or at overlooks and completing a wide variety of special projects. Serve in other park divisions such as administration, resource management, visitor protection, and maintenance may be available to round out the stewardship.

Grand Teton provides a spectrum of experience intended to grow the stewards through field experience and training, assistance integrating into park life, and building strong connections among the Steward cohort and park personnel for future support as they pursue NPS careers. Each of the stewards will be assigned a mentor in their park district who will meet with them regularly to provide insight, help adjust to park life, edit their resume and assist the steward in creating an individual career development plan. A number of Grand Teton National Park staff members have previously served as mentors and stewards. Supervisors will meet with stewards in the establishment of duties, performance expectations, and operations.

Supervisors will assure that stewards are trained – whether formally or in the service opportunity – sufficiently to perform up to expectations and assign clear tasks and goals. As needed, supervisors will coach, evaluate, and counsel stewards. Supervisors all agree that the program is developmental and will allow stewards to shadow service opportunites, meet with mentors and participate in trainings during the steward’s scheduled week.

Stewards will serve 4-5 days per week, 9 hours per day, and receive a weekly stipend. Housing will be provided. An interest or experience in natural or cultural interpretation or environmental education would be helpful but is not required. Applicants should have a strong interest in resource preservation and management, an ability to communicate ideas effectively, and enthusiasm for sharing knowledge with others.
