Advanced Biology Instructor

Description of Organization: 
The Baruch STEP Academy is an academic enrichment program with a focuson STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and providing college preparation. Managed through the CUNY Research Foundation, we serve 200 middle and high school students throughout the city each year.

1st Period Course: Advanced Biology: Biochemistry & Cell Biology | Schedule: 9am-10:25am
Course Description: This course is designed to review specific units for the AP Biology exam and/or prepare seniors for college level biology. Topics covered: 

Biochemistry: The fundamental chemical processes of living things, including the structure of water, organic molecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids), and the role of enzymes. 
Cell Biology: The structure and function of cells, their organelles, cellular processes (transport, energy capture and usage like photosynthesis and cellular respiration), and regulatory mechanisms.


2nd Period Course: Advanced Biology: Evolution & Ecology  | Schedule: 10:35am-12pm
Course Description: This course is designed to review specific units for the AP Biology exam and/or prepare seniors for college level biology. Topics covered: 

Evolution: Darwin's theory, evidence of evolution, population genetics, speciation, and phylogeny, how populations interact within communities. 
Ecology: Ecosystems, energy flow, population dynamics, biodiversity, and the impact of human activities on the environment.


Additional Information: These courses are designed for high school students interested in improving their science comprehension for test preparation and college readiness for science courses.

 

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Prepare and teach curriculum for 20-22 students
  • Evaluate student and group performance often
  • Provide staff with measurable results in student learning through assessments
  • Monitor and maintain accurate student attendance records 
  • Reassess curriculum based on students' needs, interests, and understanding of materials 


Salary per course: $1,350 = [$45 an hour x 2.5 hours (1.5 hours of instruction + 1 hour of preparation) x 12 sessions]
