Adult Language Learning English Teaching - Paid Intern

The Adult Language Learning English Teaching Intern supports English instruction for adult refugee and immigrant learners. Under the supervision of the English Program Coordinator, the intern teaches two to three classes per week, assists with lesson planning and curriculum development, and collaborates with volunteers to support learners at varying English levels. The intern helps foster a respectful, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment.

This position supports the mission and goals of the International Institute.

Responsibilities

Teach adult ESL classes (2–3 per week).

Assess student language proficiency, including pre- and post-testing.

Prepare and adapt lesson plans and instructional materials.

Maintain required documentation (attendance, lesson plans, assessments).

Support student engagement, confidence, and participation.

Communicate regularly with the English Program Coordinator regarding student progress.

Participate in meetings, trainings, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Current student or recent graduate in TESOL, MASLA, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.

Strong English language skills; prior tutoring or teaching experience preferred.

Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and Zoom; WhatsApp experience preferred.

Flexibility to work evenings and in-person and/or remotely as needed.
