Post-Baccalaureate Genomics Analyst Fellow

This two-year fellowship is designed for recent graduates (or those completing a bachelor’s degree by July 2026) who want hands-on experience in human genetics and genomics. Fellows work with NHGRI’s extramural research program or ASHG initiatives in research, policy, and public engagement—an ideal next step before graduate or professional school. Reporting to the Associate Director of Fellowship Programs, the ASHG-NHGRI Post-Baccalaureate Genomics Analyst Fellow will participate in two-year fellowship program that will provide them with broad exposure and preparation for a future career in genetics and genomics. Fellows will be assigned to either 1) support the genomics research programs and consortia at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) as a federal contractor or 2) support a variety of projects at ASHG that advance genetics and genomics research through professional and public education, scientific communications, and/or public policy. Note that this is not a research-based position.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Search, summarize, and analyze in detail scientific and programmatic information; use databases and spreadsheets to obtain and compile materials. 
  • Prepare and review tables, graphs, reports, presentation slides, and other materials. 
  • Organize, provide logistical support, and attend conference calls, scientific meetings, workshops, and other program activities. 
  • Prepare meeting agendas and minutes accurately; track action items and tasks; and ensure all aspects of the project are tracked and reported. 
  • Request information from and provide responses to program staff and/or principal investigators, and others on scientific and programmatic issues. 
  • Give regular progress reports to staff and stakeholders; maintain ongoing, proactive communication with key personnel. 
  • Coordinate updates of programmatic websites. 
  • Collaborate with other contractors and ASHG or NHGRI staff on existing projects and/or the development, initiation, and execution of new projects. 
  • Work with staff to assist and conduct management and administrative analyses; evaluate procedures, policies, processes, and systems to improve efficiency. 
  • Represent ASHG and/or NHGRI at local and national meetings; deliver presentations and posters; disseminate details of projects and collect information of value to project goals. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in a biological science or a genomics/genetics-relevant field within three years
  • Demonstrated interest in genetics and genomics; biomedical research experience preferred 
  • Involvement in scientific endeavors (e.g., teaching assistant position or participation in a scientific club) 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Ability to proactively manage multiple projects 
  • Experience working effectively independently and in teams 
  • Ability to synthesize information and understand underlying relationships to transfer knowledge to new situations 
  • Exemplary work ethic and professionalism 
  • Commitment to building an inclusive, collaborative human genetics and genomics scientific enterprise 
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Working conditions

  • Day shift hours primarily. 40 hours/week, full-time non-exempt. Occasional evening or weekend meetings or events, and travel 1-2x/year, including to the ASHG Annual Meeting each fall. Working long hours onsite at meetings 
  • This position allows for a hybrid work environment with the general expectation of working from NHGRI’s Rockledge campus or ASHG’s office approximately three days per week

Physical Requirements

This position requires sitting (90%), standing (5%), and walking (5%). It requires computer work involving extensive use of keyboard, mouse, and monitor; and occasionally requires lifting materials of ~20 lbs.
