Academic Credit Internship - Recreation and Parks Naturalist
The Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks is currently accepting applications for the 2026 Spring Semester.
Schedule: Minimum of eight (8) hours per week. Monday through Friday. This internship is unpaid, but is be eligible to receive academic credit.

The mission of the Baltimore County Government Academic Credit Internship Program is to provide students with valuable experiences working in the public sector while acquiring school credit. The internship program will help bridge the gap between the academic and professional environments.
The Department of Recreation and Parks will work with the intern and their school's academic department to ensure that the internship meets the criteria necessary for academic credit and provides students with an intern opportunity that will enable the Department to reach a new group of graduates and help develop the next generation of professionals in the field of environmental education.
This will allow them to utilize the topics and concepts they have learned while pursuing their degree. This will also allow them to learn additional skills that they can apply to future employment.
Finally, the program will also strive to foster ongoing professional relationships, in hopes that the student will seek future employment with Baltimore County Government.
Definition of Responsibility
Under close supervision, works with County Staff to present a wide variety of nature, historical, and agricultural programs, activities, and special events. Assists with the daily operations and animal care at a nature center, museum, or agricultural center.
Examples of Essential Job Duties
- Assists in creating, planning, and implementing a variety of nature, historical, and agricultural programs, activities, and special events in a heavily programmed nature center, museum, or related facility, both indoor and outdoor.
- Helps lead diversified programs and activities in the following categories: nature appreciation, natural and cultural history, environmental education, and agricultural and historical programs.
- Assists in caring for a teaching collection of native wildlife or domestic livestock.
- Assists with trail maintenance and wildlife habitat management
Examples of Other Duties
Performs other related duties as required.
Program Eligibility Requirements
Enrollment in undergraduate or graduate studies in recreation and parks, park management, forestry, a biological science, education, or a closely related field.
Education
A college transcript is required as evidence of enrollment. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level)
- A practical knowledge of the principles and practices of conducting naturalist, environmental, historical, and related recreation and parks programs and activities.
- Knowledge of natural history, botany, zoology, and land and wildlife management.
- Skill in the principles and practices of environmental, historical, or agricultural education.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver’s license equivalent to a noncommercial, Class C Maryland Driver’s License is preferred at the time of appointment.

Conditions of Employment
The duties of this internship entail some physical labor, including walking over rough and uneven surfaces in the inspection of facilities and grounds, infrequent exposure to adverse weather in the conducting of outdoor public programs and events, and some lifting and carrying in preparing for programs and events.
Possession of a valid driver’s license equivalent to a noncommercial, Class C Maryland Driver’s License is preferred at the time of appointment.
