Job Summary
Provides critical pre-hospital care to individuals experiencing medical emergencies or injuries. Operates as part of the County's emergency medical services team, responding to calls for aid, administering treatment, and ensuring safe transport to healthcare facilities. This field-based role requires clinical precision, emotional resilience, and consistent readiness to act in high-stakes environments.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Administers emergency medical care in accordance with the EMT Scope of Practice and department protocols.
- Responds to emergency calls, evaluates patient condition, and provides life-sustaining treatment on-site and during transport.
- Safely operates emergency vehicles and ensures that all related medical and communications equipment is functional and ready for use.
- Maintains clean and stocked ambulances, performing routine checks and coordinating minor maintenance or supply restocking needs.
- Accurately completes required documentation, including patient care reports, charge forms, Medicare paperwork, and release documentation.
- Participates in public education and outreach programs for schools, civic organizations, and community groups.
- Communicates promptly with supervisors regarding unusual incidents, equipment failures, or discrepancies.
- Collaborates with fellow EMTs, medics, and supervisory staff to maintain seamless emergency response coverage through on-call or station-based shifts.
- Performs general maintenance and support duties at the direction of the Director or Captains.
- Maintains required certifications and demonstrates ongoing competency through continuing education and skills refreshers.

Required Education & Experience
- Valid Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license.
- Completion of NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 within six (6) months of hire.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Education & Experience
- At least one (1) year of progressive experience in a pre-hospital emergency care environment as an EMT.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
This role requires exposure to outdoor conditions, including extreme weather, hazardous materials, and physically unstable environments. Must be able to lift at least 100 pounds repeatedly throughout the workday. The position entails high physical endurance and mental alertness, with frequent bending, kneeling, and patient handling. Operates in potentially hazardous conditions such as fires, car accidents, infectious disease environments, and high-stress scenes. Driving on wet or slippery roads may be required. On-call status and unpredictable hours may disrupt personal schedules and require rapid mobilization.
Emergency Response Statement
