About the West Lyon Community School District 

West Lyon Community School District is located in the far northwest corner of Lyon County, Iowa; the Minnesota state line provides the northern border of the district as does the South Dakota state line on the west. The district serves a student population of 926 in grades PreK-12.

Position Purpose
To inspire, lead, guide and direct every member of the administrative, instructional, and supportive services teams in setting and achieving the highest standards of excellence in developing and maintaining the best possible educational programs and services, so that each individual student enrolled in the school district will be provided with a complete, valuable, meaningful, and personally rewarding education.
 
To oversee and administer the use of all school district facilities, property, and funds with to ensure that those resources are utilized in an appropriate manner.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in School Administration
  • Iowa superintendent licensure/certificate
  • Holds an evaluator approval certification
  • Extensive successful teaching experience, preferably in more than one grade level
  • Successful experience as a building or district administrator

Preferences

  • Understanding or experience with Iowa school budgeting and finance 
  • Willing to reside in the district and be visible in the community preferred
  • Visionary person with the ability to plan for future needs of the district
  • Effective, proactive communicator preferred
  • Collaborative leader and team builder 
  • Visionary person with the ability to plan for future needs of the district
  • Ability to promote a positive climate and culture
  • Experience in strategic planning
  • Proven record of promoting student achievement
  • Lives with integrity, passion, character and in an ethical manner
  • Understands board policy and procedures
