Cultural Resources Intern

position summary

Merjent, Inc. (Merjent), is seeking a Cultural Resources Management Field Intern to join our team of dedicated consultants in Summer 2026. The Cultural Resources Management Intern will help to support Merjent Project Managers with tasks primarily associated with archeological Phase 1 field work for energy infrastructure projects.

This is a full-time, paid, entry-level internship open to studentsand recent graduates. Ongoing opportunities during the academic year may be available upon successful completion of the summer internship.

 

Eligible candidates must be able to travel and work remotely on archeological Phase 1 field work throughout the Midwest (IA, IL, MN, ND, and WI). The anticipated compensation for this position is $22/hour.

responsibilities

  • Perform pedestrian walkover survey, controlled surface survey, and shovel testing.
  • Complete field-related paperwork including but not limited to recordation of excavated shovel tests, plan view and profile drawing, and site/feature maps.
  • Assist Project Managers and Field Leads with archeological Phase 1 field work associated with permitting and compliance services for the energy sector (e.g., wind and solar, electric transmission, oil and natural gas transmission and distribution).
  • Work with internal Project Managers and Field Leads in a manner that is consistent with Merjent's reputation for excellence.

required qualifications and experience

  • Pursuing or recentlycompleted B.A. or B.S. or Graduate degreein anthropology, archaeology, or a relatedfield.
  • Previous field school experience preferred.
  • Initiative-taker with excellent organizational and task management skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly and work both in large teams and small field crews.
  • Detail-oriented with excellentproblem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral communication.
