K-12 ESL Teacher

Position:           K-12 English as a Second Language Teacher 

 

Location:           River Valley School District 

 

Compensation: According to the negotiated Master Agreement with the River Valley Education Association.

 

Job Overview: The River Valley School District is seeking a certified K–12 ESL Teacher who is passionate about language development and equity in education. The ESL Teacher will serve Multilingual Learners (MLs) across all grade levels, from Kindergarten through 12th grade. This educator will provide direct instruction aligned with WIDA standards, support students' academic and language acquisition needs, collaborate with staff and families, and promote inclusive practices that reflect the district’s core values of Responsibility, Respect, Kindness, Innovation, Determination, and Integrity.

 

This position reports directly to the building Principal(s) and works in collaboration with a team of ESL teachers, general education teachers, interventionists, and support staff.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Required: Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with ESL endorsement (NS or Bilingual endorsement), or enrollment in an approved ESL endorsement program, or willingness to seek certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field; Master’s preferred.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students.
  • Deep understanding of second language acquisition and culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Ability to build strong, positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Proficiency in integrating technology to support instruction and communication.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish or another language commonly spoken by ELL students is a plus.

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Plan, deliver, and assess ESL instruction that supports students’ English language development across listening, speaking, reading, and writing domains.
  • Develop and implement lessons aligned to WIDA standards and grade-level content expectations.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers and support staff to co-plan and modify instruction based on student language proficiency.
  • Use WIDA screening and assessment tools to identify student needs and monitor progress.
  • Use a variety of instructional models, including inclusion and pull-out.
  • Serve as an advocate and liaison for multilingual learners and their families within the school system.
  • Translate and interpret documents and conversations, where appropriate, to support school-home communication (Spanish or another language preferred).
  • Provide targeted interventions and support during designated times, such as WIN (What I Need) or small-group instruction.
  • Assist with the development of Language Acquisition Plans and participate in IEP, 504, and other student support meetings as needed.
  • Support a positive classroom and school-wide culture using consistent behavior expectations and proactive management strategies.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit reports as required by district and state guidelines.
  • Participate in professional learning communities and district in-service activities related to ESL and best practices in language development.

  • Reliable, regular, and punctual attendance is essential.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Willingness to be flexible, responsive, and solution-oriented.
  • Ability to adapt to student schedules and changing instructional needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear, and sometimes walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs.. such as boxes of books and AV carts. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, or work output of other people.
