Translation Proofreader Intern

Translation Proofreader Intern APPLY HERE

About InReach

We are InReach, a trans-led tech nonprofit building the world’s first open source verified LGBTQ+ resource platform. InReach is available on the web (desktop and mobile), iOS, and Android. Our vision is to ensure every trans and queer person has on-demand access to the safe resources they need to thrive. To date, more than 420,000 people have used InReach to access verified LGBTQ+ resources.

About the Role

As a Translation Proofreader Intern, you’ll help make the InReach platform more accessible by improving the clarity, accuracy, and inclusivity of our multilingual content. Rather than relying solely on automated tools, we use Crowdin, a localization management system that allows human translators to verify and enhance machine-generated translations. Your work ensures that LGBTQ+ people, including asylum seekers, refugees, and community members with limited English proficiency—can access safe, affirming support in their native language.

This is an impactful opportunity to apply your language skills toward LGBTQ+ rights, language justice, and humanitarian support.

Internship Details

  • Spring 2026 Dates: Monday, January 20 – Friday, May 8, 2026
  • Required Hours per Week: 10 hours (flexible scheduling Monday–Friday based on your availability and time zone; all interns log hours in InReach’s volunteer management system for accountability)
  • Location: Fully remote (United States, Canada, or Mexico)
  • Compensation: Unpaid (InReach staff can assist with academic credit upon request)

Responsibilities

As a Translation Proofreader Intern, you will:

  • Report to InReach’s Resource Coordinator Staff.
  • Complete a virtual training program covering LGBTQ+ rights, inclusive terminology, intersectionality, and the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and displaced people.
  • Use Crowdin to translate InReach content from English into a second language.
  • Proofread human-created and machine-generated translations for accuracy, clarity, cultural relevance, and inclusivity.
  • “Accept” or “decline” translations within Crowdin based on quality.
  • Participate in translation discussions and resolve terminology questions with the InReach translation team via Discord.
  • Assist with additional translation and localization tasks as needed.
  • Interns generally aim to edit/proof a meaningful volume each week to support platform accessibility; actual expectations will be scaled appropriately to a 10-hour, part-time commitment.

Who You Are

We encourage you to apply if you:

  • Are pursuing or have obtained a bachelor's or master’s degree.
  • Have professional proficiency in English and professional proficiency in at least one of the following languages:
  • Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Korean, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, or Ukrainian.
  • Have reliable computer and internet access.
  • Are able to write using gender-inclusive language in English and your second language (e.g., e/x in Spanish, “folx” in English).
  • Are willing to learn and use Crowdin, Discord, and Bloomerang (InReach’s volunteer hours system).
  • Are detail-oriented, reliable, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Are passionate about language justice, refugee rights, and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
  • Are available 10 hours per week (Monday–Friday).

At InReach, interns are teammates. We invest in your growth because the work you do has a direct, measurable impact on LGBTQ+ people seeking safety and support. During your time with us, you’ll gain:

  • Mission-Driven Experience: Direct involvement in LGBTQ+ rights, tech for good, and humanitarian response work.
  • Skill-Building & Mentorship: Ongoing support from staff, optional 1:1 coaching sessions, and feedback designed to help you grow.
  • Career Exposure: Insight into nonprofit operations, service provider networks, and platform-building inside a tech nonprofit.
