About Virginia Interfaith Power & Light (VAIPL)

Virginia Interfaith Power & Light (VAIPL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the Virginia affiliate of the national Interfaith Power & Light network. Internship Overview

We are seeking a motivated and passionate Environmental Justice Research Intern to provide essential support to our research and advocacy initiatives. This role is ideal for an individual looking to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit research, data analysis, and justice-centered environmental work. The intern will contribute directly to our mission by helping to document environmental and climate justice topics and identify actionable paths to justice.

Sample Responsibilities:

  • Research & Data Analysis: Conduct in-depth qualitative and quantitative research on environmental justice issues (e.g., air/water pollution, food insecurity, land access, renewables, energy, solar, etc).
  • Literature Reviews: Assist with conducting literature searches and writing literature reviews, case studies, or blog articles to summarize key findings.
  • Content Creation: Draft social media content and educational materials to raise awareness about environmental justice topics and ongoing initiatives.
  • Community Engagement Support: Assist with planning and outreach for community events, workshops, and advocacy campaigns, helping to elevate the needs and perspectives of marginalized communities.
  • General Support: Provide general administrative support as needed.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who can bring a variety of attributes and experiences to our team:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor's or master's degree in Environmental Science, Political Science, Public Policy, Sociology, Urban Planning, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental justice, climate justice, equity, or social justice issues.
  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills, with attention to detail.
  • Experience in analyzing data and communicating findings to diverse audiences is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a dynamic team.
  • Familiarity with Google Workplace; experience with GIS software is a plus.
