Door Shakespeare - Arts Administration Intern - Lawrence-Funded Internship

Door Shakespeare

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Arts Administration Intern facilitates the operations of Door Shakespeare’s administrative offices by participating in areas of theater management, including development, marketing, box office, retail, and company management. Door Shakespeare provides a well-rounded experience for interns, offering opportunities to explore all areas of the theater. We are dedicated to providing a supportive learning environment supplemented with high levels of responsibility and flexible learning opportunities guided by individual talents and interests. In addition to arts administration responsibilities, the internship includes up to 10 hours of work per week in the Björklunden Lodge.

Responsibilities include:

● Preparing the dining room for Lodge guests.

● Preparing lodging rooms for Björklunden guests.

THE WORKPLACE The Arts Administration Intern splits their time between the administrative office, performance venue, and the Björklunden Lodge. The administrative office, which also houses the daytime box office, is six miles north of the performance venue. The facility includes a reception desk, desktop computers, printers, bathroom, and kitchenette.
Door Shakespeare performs outdoors on a wooden stage set among trees about 200 yards from Lake Michigan, at Björklunden in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin. The venue’s box office is an enclosed wooden structure with a service window for patrons. The concession stand consists of a metal-framed tent over a wooden base. Workdays typically involve outdoor rehearsal, performance, and setup in fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions. The Björklunden Lodge is located on Lake Michigan and features a great room, three seminar rooms, a dining room, a kitchen, and 22 guest rooms. There are two lakeside decks, a second-story observation deck, an elevator, and a computer lab. The company is committed to safety and accessibility for all members. Please contact the Producing Artistic Director with information regarding any accommodations needed in the workplace. Door Shakespeare is a COVID-19 vaccinated workplace.

TRANSPORTATION
While Door County is a tourist destination known for its natural beauty, it does not have public transportation. During the 2026 season, the arts administrative intern needs to arrange their own transportation to, and within, Door County.
HOUSING
Dormitory-style housing is provided in the Björklunden Lodge. Each dorm room houses up to five students with a shared bathroom, kitchen, and common area. The Björklunden Lodge is a two-story, 37,000-square-foot facility containing a great room, three seminar rooms, a dining room, a kitchen, and 22 guest rooms. There are two lakeside decks, a second-story observation deck, an elevator, and a computer lab. The entire facility has wireless Internet access and ample parking.

SCHEDULE During the rehearsal period, Arts Administration Interns traditionally work five days a week, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a forty-five-minute lunch break. During the last week of rehearsal and throughout the performance schedule, hours shift later in the day (2 p.m. to 11 p.m.) to match performance schedules.

REHEARSAL PERIOD Interns receive training in box office and concession duties, including customer service, ticket sales, marketing, inventory tracking, and bookkeeping.

PERFORMANCE PERIOD Once the season opens, interns spend afternoons in the daytime box office. In the early evening, they set up the concessions area and help the front-of-house and box office teams prepare for audience arrival. When the house opens, interns work in the concession stand. After the show begins, there is quiet time to complete additional duties determined in collaboration with the front-of-house manager. During intermission, concession sales resume. After intermission, concessions are stored, and the cash register is closed. When the show ends, interns help organize the performance and patron area and return the cash register and donation baskets to the daytime box office. The last task is to fill out and file the concessions reconciliation worksheet.

POSTSEASON After performances close, interns join production interns, stage management, and leadership teams to help “strike” (clean up and store materials) for the front-of-house, performance space, box office, concessions tent, and patron areas.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES Further arts administration duties may include, but are not limited to:

● Understudy tracks and production support

● Distribution of marketing materials

● Public relations (press releases, social media posts, newspaper columns)

● Event planning (fundraising gala, community events, Shake it Up Saturday, Camp Will, Will in the Woods)

● Data entry, financial reporting, filing, donor recognition

● Cleaning and maintenance

GUIDANCE The administrative intern reports to the Producing Artistic Director, with additional supervision and support from the Björklunden Operations Manager. They also coordinate closely with the Front-of-House Manager, Box Office Manager, and Production Stage Manager.
