VPSL - Communications Assistant - Student Life Communications

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Students working in Student Life Communications will gain experience working on marketing, social media, and communication campaigns in an efficient, creative, and timely manner. You can expect to learn skills such as time management, branding, audience and platform centered writing, balancing priorities, managing finances, interpersonal communication, customer services experience, working with people from diverse backgrounds, social media development and analytics, and working as part of a team.

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direct mentorship and guidance of a full-time communications professional, you will assist in the development and implementation of marketing and communications campaigns for various departments in the Division of Student Life. You will have the opportunity to brainstorm creative ideas, assist with project timelines, and help deliver a quality, on-time product. After completion, you apply analytical skills to measure campaign success.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide input to marketing and communications plansfor partners underdirection of the manager
  • Assist in project management process
  • Assist communications specialist with miscellaneous projects and administrative tasks
  • Assist in execution of long-term strategic communications plans, including social media, web content, print, and digital media

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates should be majoring in marketing, communication studies, journalism and mass communication, or a related area of study
  • Resume is required
  • Some computer experience
  • Valid driver’s license is preferred
  • One year commitment required.  You may start first or second semester, but you must be available to work the first full summer of employment. All subsequent summers are not required.

LOCATIONS

  • Student Life Communications office located in the Iowa Memorial Union, Burge Hall, or Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (depending on area of concentration)

WORK HOURS

  • This position is limited to up to 20 hours per week (320 hours per semester). Students may work up to 40 hours per week during break periods (spring, summer, fall, and winter) as assigned.
  • Availability during business hours Monday – Friday is required. Various hours between 8am and 5pm. There may be times when a successful candidate for this position will be asked to work evenings or weekend hours for event coverage.
