Planning Internship

Job Title: Planning Internship

Location: City of Dayton, Department of Planning Neighborhoods, and Development

Position Type: Internship (Paid)

Hours per Week: 20-40 hours during the summer or dedicated work term

Job Description:

The City of Dayton is seeking a highly motivated and passionate Planning Intern to join the Department of Planning Neighborhoods, and Development. This internship offers a unique opportunity for students pursuing a career in urban planning, community development, public administration, economic development or a related field to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic municipal planning environment. Interns will gain exposure to a variety of planning activities and functions across multiple divisions within the Department.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with research and data collection for a variety of projects, including topics such as land use, zoning, transportation, and community development.

 

  1. Contribute to the preparation of reports, policies, and other documents related to urban development, public services, and local government initiatives.

 

  1. Attend and observe public meetings, hearings, and community gatherings, taking notes and assisting with related follow-up tasks.

 

  1. Help review project proposals and applications, compiling relevant information for both internal teams and external partners.

 

  1. Support mapping and data analysis tasks using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other tools.

 

  1. Collaborate with multiple teams and departments, such as transportation, housing, and historic preservation, to gain a broad perspective on municipal operations.

 

  1. Assist in developing materials and tools for community outreach and engagement, including presentations, surveys, and informational handouts.

 

  1. Shadow professionals in various roles to gain insight into public sector workflows, project coordination, and policy development.

 

  1. Provide general administrative support for department activities and public events.

 

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate, graduate, or certification program in urban planning, geography, public administration, or a related field.[ES1] 
  • Strong interest in local government and community development.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with GIS software is a plus but not required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to attend and participate in evening public meetings, if required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands 

  • Work is primarily performed in an office setting, with occasional field visits to project sites. 
  • Some travel may be required within the city for site visits and community meetings. 
  • The role may involve standing, walking, and light lifting of up to 25 pounds. 

Compensation & Schedule 

  • This is a paid internship position. Hourly rate to be determined [ES2]  
  • Flexible schedule based on academic commitments, with an expected commitment of 15-20 hours per week or seasonal full-time.
