Position Title: Community Volunteer Ambassador, Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument – AmeriCorps
Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements Program
Site Location: Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument
601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, NV 89005
Terms of Service:
Start Date: 2/23/2026
End Date: 2/5/2027
AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1700 Hour Slot
Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.
The Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument Friends Group, Protectors of Tule Springs members are currently the majority of our volunteers. We would like to expand our network of volunteers to reflect the surrounding Las Vegas and North Las Vegas communities. TUSK would also like to engage residents living in newly built communities surrounding the monument to encourage stewardship before harmful activities may occur, like off-roading or trash dumping. Programs include Volunteer Mounted Horse Patrol, B.A.R.K. Ranger and dog waste removal, resource management data collection, and volunteer perimeter fence monitoring. TUSK has also developed several volunteer community science opportunities to assist with inventory and monitoring efforts for rare plants and wildlife. Other volunteers assist the TUSK Park Ranger with school programs, guided hikes, and park special events.
As an urban park, team TUSK sincerely values community partnerships. With a very small staff and lack of on-site facilities, leveraging strategic community partnerships help us expand our audiences, all the while providing quality programming to our local community. While we have a foundation of community partnerships, we have identified a timely need for further outreach, more effective communication, and stronger partnerships. The city is expanding; there are currently 8,600 homes being built in the 2,000 acres of privately held property directly southeast of the park boundary. After development, the population immediately adjacent to this boundary is expected to increase by more than 75%. For many years, TUSK has documented illegal, resource-damaging activities, such as off-roading and trash dumping. Strong, authentic community outreach and relationships encourage volunteerism and stewardship of park resources, while discouraging harmful behavior. These relationships also help instill pride and a sense of place and time for the local community. The CVA will establish an outreach plan for the park that will enable TUSK to efficiently and consistently keep the community informed of park issues and activities.
Description of Duties:
