Research Assistant

Research Assistant Position available at Weissman Hood Institute

Weissman Hood Institute (formerly McLaughlin Research Institute) (www.mclaughlinresearch.org) is a non-profit research organization in Great Falls, Montana, and provides an outstanding environment to train for a career in biomedical research. The research focus at the institute is on human and veterinary neurodegenerative diseases, such as Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and prion diseases including Chronic Wasting Disease. We use animal models to investigate disease mechanisms and to develop and test treatments for these diseases. Approaches include mouse behavioral assessments, molecular biology, brain pathology, cell culture, mutagenesis, CRISPR, among others. 

 

The current opening is for a Research Assistant position, working on research projects primarily focused on neurodegenerative diseases such as AMD and Alzheimer’s disease. Projects will involve animal procedures, tissue analysis by immunohistochemical and protein biochemical methods, as well as cell culturing, and a wide range of other molecular biology techniques.

We are looking for a hard-working person who has completed a bachelor’s degree in Biology, or related fields, and wishes to gain at least 2 years of research experience. You will be working in the laboratory of Dr. Mikael Klingeborn.

 

Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree is required, along with fluency in English. 
  • Must be willing and able to handle laboratory mice. 
  • Interact effectively with laboratory and animal facility staff as well as work independently with a dependable and quality work ethic. 
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. 
  • An ability to perform lab managerial tasks (i.e. purchasing, lab safety checks, preparing general use materials, keeping general areas clean).
  • Provide support to lab members in the execution of new research procedures, techniques, and experiments.

 

You will also have your own individual projects to gain more hands-on research experience. You will be expected to ethically collect and manage data, keep an accurate and complete lab notebook, and contribute to journal publications. 

 

The ideal candidate is passionate for research in basic science, organized, self-motivated, and has great time management skills. It is imperative that the candidate is willing to collaborate with other lab members. We welcome recent graduates who are eager to contribute to cutting-edge research and expand their skills in biomedical research, in particular neurodegenerative disease research.

 

Competitive salary for this type of position starting at $35,568 per year for applicants with no prior laboratory research experience, with higher starting salaries for applicants with relevant prior experience, and opportunities to advance. Relocation support is negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
