Paralegal, Litigation
JOB SUMMARY
Kutak Rock LLP seeks a Paralegal in its Philadelphia office. This position is to work with and support multiple attorneys and staff members in all matters of litigation including, primarily, insurance coverage and defense litigation, commercial litigation, and creditor rights litigation. This role is ideal for an experienced litigation paralegal who enjoys working in a collaborative and collegial environment with a busy regional and national firm.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform legal and nonlegal research
- Draft subpoenas, pleadings, motions, discovery, emails, briefs, memoranda, and other written correspondence on behalf of attorneys
- Assist with all aspects of the discovery phase of litigation including preparing discovery requests, discovery objections and responses, issuing subpoenas, and coordinating depositions
- Assist attorneys with deposition preparation including preparing witness question outlines and compiling the necessary exhibits to be offered during deposition
- Summarize and analyze documents, medical records, discovery responses, and deposition transcripts, attending depositions when needed
- Assist with pre-trial preparation in the gathering, review, analysis, and production of documents, including trial documents, medical records and letters of claim, exhibit preparation, trial and exhibit notebooks, preparing direct and cross examinations, and coordinating the necessary travel arrangements and various resource needs for trial
- Communicate effectively with clients, opposing counsel, opposing party (if not represented by counsel), vendors and/or other third parties
- Manage voluminous document production for complex litigation matter
- Manage case management database and web-based document repository for e-discovery productions
- Review, tag, and produce document productions, downloading or uploading documents to various databases as required and preparing redactions and privilege logs as needed
- Accurately enter time and expense records into InTapp Time; prepare expense memoranda and documentation for accounting purposes
- Coordinate client billing matters, prepare billing letters, and requested client financial updates
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: Skills and Abilities
- High proficiency in court rules, discovery rules and trial procedures (Pennsylvania and New Jersey (including state trial and appellate courts and federal trial and appellate courts)
- Advanced understanding of law and motion calendaring, trial calendaring procedures and deadlines
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage large quantities of information
- Ability to work well under the pressures of strict deadlines, multi-task, prioritize assignments, and move between tasks efficiently and quickly
- Ability to work both collaboratively as part of a team and independently or unsupervised
- Excellent spelling, grammar, and proofreading skills with a strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage information with confidentiality and discretion
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an aptitude to interface with attorneys, clients, staff, and firm visitors
- Experience with Adobe and Kofax PDF, and document comparison and formatting software such as Litera and Forte
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products, including but not limited to Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Styles. Knowledge of NetDocuments (NetDocs) a plus
- Flexibility to work overtime outside of normal scheduled hours in the event of trial preparation
QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience
- High school diploma (or equivalent) required, associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
- Paralegal certification from an ABA accredited program, notary certification a plus
- 5+ years of paralegal experience in a litigation practice required
Position Information
Status: Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $64,000-$82,000 per year, commensurate with experience
Work Arrangement: Hybrid, after initial introductory period, with manager approval
