Licensed Practical Nurse

Job description:

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Licensed Practical Nurse works as part of the clinic provider team and assists the medical providers in the provision of primary health care. The nurse provides direct patient services and performs specifically designated independent procedures. The primary focus of the Licensed Practical Nurse is the delivery of quality nursing care in a timely and cost efficient manner.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist RHCC in maintaining a daily productivity goal as designated by the President/CEO.
  • Ensure quality patient care per JCAHO, Bureau of Primary Health Care, NCBON and RHCC standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Robeson Health Care Corporation to meet the goal of providing primary and preventive health care services.
  • Calibrates adult and pediatric scales daily along with performing quality controls of the glucometers, urinalysis machine and other CLIA waived laboratory tests.
  • Checks and documents the temperature on refrigerators for nursing and the laboratory daily.
  • Ensures that assigned exam rooms are stocked with needed supplies.
  • Prepares patients for examination including the identification of the chief complaint, obtaining vital signs, height, weight, etc.
  • Obtain vital signs (temperature [oral, rectal, axillary], pulse [radial and apical], respirations, BP, Pulse Oximetry) and reports abnormalities to the clinic nurse or medical provider.
  • Prepares the patient for appropriate exam by the provider. (Reads the previous encounter note from the patient’s last visit.)6.
  • Collects and assures that ordered laboratory tests are completed (may include completing special lab forms). These tests include all CLIA waived tests: Strep A, Urinalysis without micro, blood glucose testing, urine pregnancy testing, HIV quick test, Hemoglobin A1C and Occult blood testing.
  • Obtains immunization reports from the NCIR (North Carolina Immunization Registry) for review by the provider before patient’s exam.
  • Conducts hearing, vision, and blood pressure screenings.
  • Assists the medical provider with routine exams and procedures (i.e. Pap smear, biopsy, etc.), as well as during medical emergencies.
  • Assists with referrals and follow-up arrangements for special tests and x-rays, such as mammograms and CT scans, with appropriate facilities.
  • Performs ordered procedures after appropriate training. These tests include EKG, Spriometry Testing, Vision and Hearing Screenings, Cerumen removal and Peak Flow rates.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of Robeson Health Care Corporation and the patient/ clients that the corporation serves.
  • Maintains HIPAA guidelines and JCAHO readiness
  • Performs clean or sterile dressing changes and wound irrigation as per provider. Also performs cerumen removal.
  • Able to document vital signs, performance of procedures and any interaction with the patient in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Cleans and arranges the exam room after a patient leaves, in preparation for the next patient, using the exposure control plan guidelines.
  • Functions as a member of the healthcare team by working collaboratively with all members in the medical center. Manages own behavior effectively as a member of the team.
  • Respects the privacy and dignity of individuals and families and provides culturally sensitive care across the lifespan to individuals within a diverse society.
  • Demonstrates ethical and legal behavior in nursing practice by adhering to the nursing code of ethics and practices nursing within the full scope and legal boundaries of licensed practical nursing.
  • Rotates to other RHCC sites/specialties as needed.
  • Set-up oxygen therapy and monitor flow rate.
  • Perform discontinuation of peripheral intravenous infusions.
  • Performs male and female urinary catheterizations
  • Assist with minor surgical procedures, performs skin prep and scrubs.
  • Document appropriate services provided in patients’ charts.
  • Call in refill prescriptions to local pharmacies as ordered by the medical providers.
  • Provides patient instructions and health education as directed.
  • Administers injections as ordered by the medical provider.
  • Maintains proper security and documentation of on-site controlled, when applicable, and uncontrolled substances.
  • Conducts patient triage as necessary by collection of data (subjective reporting, objective reporting, observations of appearance and behavior) under the guidance/protocol of a licensed medical provider.
  • Administer pediatric immunizations and ensures all necessary paperwork is completed including documentation in the NCIR (North Carolina Immunization Registry) and EMR (Electronic medical Record)

  • An unrestricted license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
  • Sufficient experience to perform the duties of this position.
  • Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certificate.
