Brand Designer
Brand Designer (Contract) — DormWay
Type: Contract (6-8 weeks, potential extension)
Remote: Yes
What we're building
DormWay is the operating system for college life—a platform that pulls together syllabi, Canvas, calendars, and everything else students juggle so they never wonder what's due.
Two founders. One learned to code while building it. The other has 30 years in consumer tech. We ship fast, work in public, and are about to scale from early users to 6,000+ campuses.
Our product works. Our brand needs to catch up.
Why we're hiring students
Everything about DormWay is built by students. Our co-founder is a senior at Michigan who learned to code building this product. Our QA team is students. Our campus ambassadors are students. We're not interested in hiring an agency to tell us what college students want—we want the people who actually live this to shape how it looks and feels.
If you're a design student looking to do real work (not fetch coffee, not mock up someone else's ideas), this is that.
The problem
We've been moving fast on product and haven't given our visual identity the attention it deserves. We have functional design, not distinctive design. We need someone who can take rough direction and build a cohesive visual system that:
- Works across iOS app, web, social, and print
- Feels like it was made by students, not a corporation
- Scales as we grow without needing constant oversight
What you'll do
- Design the logo and lockup system (wordmark, icon, horizontal/stacked variants, clear space rules)
- Develop a visual identity system (color, type, spacing, component patterns)
- Create templates for social content, marketing collateral, and app store assets
- Design landing page visuals and onboarding illustrations
- Build out brand guidelines documentation so we can execute without you
You'll work directly with both founders. Decisions get made fast. No design-by-committee nonsense.
What we're looking for
- Currently enrolled design student or recent graduate
- Strong portfolio showing logo design, brand systems, or visual identity work
- Can translate abstract direction into polished output
- Understands mobile-first design constraints
- Comfortable with ambiguity—we'll give you the problem, not a spec
- Available to start within 2 weeks
Nice to have:
- Experience with Figma component libraries
- Motion/animation skills
