Research & Development Intern: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Start Date: Immediate through Summer 2026

Reports to: Senior Scientist for Analytics

What you’ll do: As an R&D Intern, you’ll work in a modern Research Laboratory environment and gain experience in a diverse product line. We are seeking a highly motivated Intern to join our R&D group focused on Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Predictive Modeling. The candidate will contribute to the development of data-driven tools and applications that support product development, manufacturing optimization, chemical formulation modeling, and broader business decision-making.

 

Duties / Responsibilities of this position: 

  • Develop, validate, and refine predictive models for material behavior, chemical formulation performance, and manufacturing processes.
  • Analyze laboratory, production, and process data to extract insights and support decision-making across R&D and operations.
  • Build and maintain Python-, R-, and/or MATLAB-based tools, scripts, and applications used internally for analytics, prediction, visualization, forecasting and modeling workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including R&D, Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing—to understand technical needs and deliver actionable solutions.
  • Assist in designing data pipelines, cleaning datasets, and preparing structured inputs for machine learning model development.
  • Document methodologies, maintain organized code repositories, and contribute to standardizing best practices for model development and deployment.
  • Communicate findings, model results, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including global R&D teams. Create visualizations of trends and generate interpretable structure–property maps for a variety of business and science domains.
  • Work independently while also collaborating in a research team enabling creation of new materials and business tools that provide high impact results to many business units inside our company.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Pursuing or holding a BS or MS degree in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, R, or MATLAB, with the ability to write clean, well-structured code.  Experience in scientific computing and data analysis libraries such as PyTorch, SciKit-Learn, SciPy, TensorFlow, etc.
  • Foundational understanding of machine learning techniques, numerical modeling, or statistical analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of cross-functional technical teams.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to present analytical results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Desire to work in a hands-on research laboratory preparing chemical compounds using modern mixing protocols, create mechanical and chemical test samples, conduct physical and chemical tests to obtain pertinent properties.
  • Interest in statistical modeling, linear algebra, and willingness to expand on current academic training. Professional development courses available.
  • Ability to clearly present technical findings in written reports and oral presentations.
  • Comfortable working in a cross-disciplinary R&D team environment.

Physical Demands Analysis: 

  • Light to moderate lifting may be required
  • Continuous computer work, keyboarding, computer mouse, and computer monitor
  • Rare climbing stairs, bending, and stooping
  • Personal Protective Equipment Requirements (PPE): safety shoes, safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, hearing protection, and other PPE.
