Job Description:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Teaching Assistant to work with the Future Lab, an after-school program for middle school students in Somerville, MA. Future Lab is a college and career youth development and support program designed to equip students with the skills, confidence, and pathways needed to thrive academically, socially, and in their future careers.
The Teaching Assistant will be responsible for supporting the Education and Career Instructors, who are primarily responsible for delivering the curriculum. The Teaching Assistant will assist in preparing materials, setting up activities, leading small-group sessions, and providing general support to students in the program. In this role, it is crucial to create a welcoming environment where youth feel supported as they navigate pathways to higher education, skill development, long-term career opportunities, and lifelong learning.
The program will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays immediately following the end of the school day in Somerville Public Schools. Teaching Assistants will work approximately 10 hours a week. This six-month contract spans from January to June 2026, with the potential for a summer extension.
Responsibilities:
- Work directly with the Education and Career Instructors to implement the curriculum. Provide support through leading small group activities, gathering materials, and assisting students with their tasks.
- Build trusting relationships through regular communication with students, and offer encouragement and guidance in a supportive and welcoming environment.
- Assist in administering surveys to students throughout the program to track progress in SEL, college and career readiness, and other areas of concern.
- Act as chaperones during occasional field trips during program time, ensuring students travel to and from all locations safely.
- Work closely with the Education and Career Instructors, who will lead the program and are responsible for ensuring the smooth implementation of the curriculum.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- A 2- or 4-year degree in social work, education, counseling, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Current undergraduate students will be considered.
- 1-4 years of experience working with middle or high school youth, including experience working with ELL, first-generation, and low-income students. Experience working with students with IEPs is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to build rapport and trust.
- Strong problem-solving skills and proven record for taking ownership of responsibilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while independently managing tasks and responsibilities.
- Experience working in an international and multicultural environment.
- Undergrad or graduate students with teaching experience are welcomed to apply.
Highly Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities in Spanish, Haitian Creole, and/or Portuguese.
- First aid and CPR certification.
