Job Description:

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Ceramics Wheel Specialist to join our summer day camp team. The ideal candidate will have significant expertise in ceramics, particularly in using pottery wheels, working with kilns, and glazing techniques. This position involves teaching small groups of children aged 8-14, fostering their creativity, and providing hands-on pottery experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach ceramics wheel skills in a fun and engaging manner to small groups of campers.
  • Demonstrate techniques for shaping, centering, and crafting pottery using the wheel.
  • Guide students through the entire ceramics process, including clay preparation, throwing, trimming, glazing, and firing.
  • Load and unload kilns safely and efficiently, ensuring proper firing processes for all projects.
  • Supervise and manage students during all pottery sessions, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Provide individualized attention and encouragement to campers, helping them develop their skills and confidence.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, including the ceramics studio and kiln area.
  • Collaborate with camp staff to design and implement creative projects and activities related to ceramics.
  • Foster a positive camp atmosphere that promotes teamwork, creativity, and self-expression.

Qualifications:

  • Significant experience with pottery wheels and ceramics processes, including but not limited to throwing, trimming, glazing, and kiln operation.
  • Proven experience working with children, preferably in a camp or educational setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children and adapt teaching methods to suit diverse learning styles.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and best practices in ceramics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or coursework in ceramics, art education, or a related field.
  • Experience with youth mentorship and facilitating engaging art experiences.
