This fund provides financial support of $3,000-5,000 to a student interested in pursuing an internship experience that will increase cultural understanding of Asia, with a focus on Japan. By supplementing classroom education with internship experience, students gain a practical understanding of the demands and rewards of future careers. The Tanka Memorial Foundation’s generosity will enable students the opportunity to test their skills and realize their potential. This award can be used for a domestic or international internship.
Countries under State Department warning will be excluded as will other countries as decided upon by Hobart and William Smith Colleges due to world crisis and disasters as situations arise. In early 2018 the US Department of State established a new system through which it provides information and guidance to US travelers. As a result, our long-standing policy has been rendered obsolete and, like many institutions committed to international education, the Colleges have been compelled to review and revise existing policies and protocols.
The full description of the policy is available here. No Level 4 country will be funded. If you have any questions about the policy, please direct them to Tom D’Agostino in CGE.
All current first years, sophomores, and juniors enrolled at, and returning to Hobart and William Smith Colleges are eligible to receive an award. Students must have all guaranteed internship requirements completed in order to be eligible to receive the award. As part of the application process, students must include an essay and two letters of recommendation. Please see attached application for further instructions.
Selected students will be required to maintain a personal journal about the internship during the experience that will be uploaded weekly to the HWS website. Upon return to campus in the Fall, awardees are required to submit a five-page paper on the experience and make two presentations to peers to help recruit students for the following summer, in addition to being available for Admission Open House events.
A personal interview will be required for the top candidates; one stipend will be awarded for Summer 2026.
Awards are available for summer internships only.
