Job Purpose

The Access Services Evening Manager is a permanent, full-time staff member of the Access & Instruction Team at the College of Charleston Libraries and manages and supervises the operations of the Access Services Department in Addlestone Library during evening hours to ensure excellent customer service is provided to all patrons. This position works primarily at the Access & Instruction Desk in Addlestone Library under the direct supervision of the Head of Access Services. Directly supporting Pillar 1 in the College’s Strategic Plan, this position impacts our students’ College experience and success by providing academic support and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where all students feel they belong. The Access Services Evening Manager provides excellent point-of-need access and instruction services (in-person and virtually) and support in the use and promotion of library resources and services to all patrons; selects, supervises, and evaluates performance of evening staff; assists with supervising and training student employees; and ensures library systems and facilities are operating as expected.

Minimum Requirements

A bachelor’s degree is required. Ability to bend, stoop, and lift material up to 30 pounds. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.


Working evenings and Sundays is required. The typical work week during regular semesters is Sunday – Thursday, 4:00PM – Midnight. Hours are subject to change and may be revised as needed, especially during summers, holidays, and days when classes are not in session.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to use independent judgment when resolving patron issues. Ability to gather and report data, think creatively and recommend solutions for service and technical problems. Ability to communicate with library staff and administration as well as library patrons. Ability to enforce library and College policies and procedures. Proficient in computing, electronic calendaring, word processing, and spreadsheets. Able to deliver staff training on customer service topics, as well as technical training for automated library systems.

Manages and supervises the operation of the Access Services evening shift, including operations of circulation, reserves, shelving, interlibrary loan, and point of need instruction at both Access & Instruction Desks; directly supervises and conducts informal and formal EPMS evaluations for evening Access Services staff; coordinates and monitors scheduling to ensure adequate staffing to meet exceptional service standards; monitors workflows for issues and areas for improvement; assists in recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating staff and student employees within the Access Services unit; ensure operations follow all library and College policies and guidelines, and prepares, maintains, communicates, and updates departmental policies, procedures, and manuals. Works and troubleshoots issues independently. Provides excellent access services, point-of-need research assistance, and instruction for students, both in person and virtually, at the Access & Instruction Desk.

Activity

Consults with members of the Access and Instruction unit to produce cohesive promotional and informational materials for the College Libraries using media and design tools, such as Canva, while adhering to best practices for applicable content creation. Systematically posts marketing and promotional content to social media, library website, and other platforms. Designs and creates tangible promotional and informational material and monitors and reports on the performance of these efforts. Supports library instruction and participates in various library activities, including New Student Orientation, UX projects, and Weeks of Welcome events.

Activity

Supports Head of Access Services with collection, analysis, and reporting of data related to access & instruction services. Investigates, develops, and assists with the implementation of new student services and programs to improve the use of and access to library collections (print, electronic, digital, AV, etc.). When necessary, performs opening and/or closing procedures for the library. Works with Public Safety staff to secure the facility. Advises library administration regarding building issues. Ensures the safety and welfare of its patrons.
