Fort Miles Historical Collections and Interpretation Intern-Cape Henlopen State Park

Learn how to preserve the past and bring it back to life! Help share the history of Delaware’s State Parks by working alongside our professional staff of historical educators. Help provide historical education programming, while learning and practicing the basics of museum collections management. This internship provides the candidate with both public speaking experience and entry-level experience in inventorying and managing museum and education collections. 

nterns will also participate in intern-wide professional development activities and experiential learning opportunities that may require them to be off-site or away from their placement. Each intern will complete a personalized “demonstration of learning” project. At the conclusion of the internship, all interns will present their projects during a poster session for peers and Delaware State Parks staff.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team of interpreters to conduct historical programming, interpretation, maintenance and/or administration duties
  • Work with the Interpretive Programs Manager on management of the site’s more than 500 object collection, including updating database entries
  • Responsibilities can include all or some of the following:
    • Help to conduct and transcribe oral history interviews
    • Participate in costumed historic demonstrations
    • Help lead programs such as tours and demonstrations
    • Help rehousing collections items
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Required Skills

  • Able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
  • An interest in history, education, and museum collections
  • Willing to study and learn Delaware history
  • Able to communicate effectively with a diverse public and speak publicly in front of groups or audiences
  • Professional appearance and demeanor, responsible and trustworthy
  • Pleasant and personable, good customer service skills
  • Work well independently or as a cooperative, contributory team member
  • Able to assist with both Indoor and Outdoor programs
  • Able to stand for long periods, lift 10 pounds from crouching position, and walk 2 miles

Facility with PastPerfect software is preferred, but not required.
