2026 Summer Internship Program - Security Engineer Intern

OUR BANK - The Federal Reserve is the central bank of the United States and is one of the most influential, trusted, and prestigious financial organizations. It consists of twelve Reserve Banks located around the country and the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C. The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta territory covers the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which includes Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, and portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The Atlanta Fed and the other Reserve Banks play an important part in all three of the Fed's functions: monetary policy, bank supervision and regulation, and the operation of a nationwide payment system.

SCOPE OF ASSIGNMENT:

 

Assist the Security Architecture team in evaluating and designing secure technology solutions across on-premise, cloud, and hybrid environments. This internship provides exposure to enterprise identity management, software security, and cloud security fundamentals while learning how architecture decisions influence risk and resilience.

Responsibilities:

Support identity and access management operations (provisioning, access reviews, privilege audits).

Assist in application and cloud security reviews.

Participate in evaluating security configurations and documenting recommendations.

Help maintain architecture diagrams, inventories, and control mappings.

Research emerging security technologies and architectural best practices.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Students must be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university in a Bachelor or Graduate degree program through the duration of the internship.

Minimum cumulative GPA above 3.0 in academically rigorous curriculum.

Must be committed to working a 40-hour work week for 10-12 weeks during the summer months.

 

Technical Skills:

Familiarity with IAM concepts.

Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) and shared responsibility models.

Understanding of secure coding and OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities.

Basic scripting or automation (PowerShell, Python) for system or access management.

Use of diagramming or architecture tools (Visio, etc.).


Functional Skills:

Understanding of how security controls integrate into system and application design.

Ability to interpret security requirements and map them to technical solutions.

Awareness of security architecture principles (defense in depth, zero trust, least privilege).

Analytical thinking and attention to dependencies between identity, application, and cloud security.

Ability to synthesize technical information into clear documentation.

Computer Science

Cybersecurity

Computer Engineering

Software Engineering

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

Strong analytical skills

Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects

Great work ethic and detail oriented

Comfortable working across time zones to complete projects in a timely manner
