The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring Recreation Wardens in the Division of Public Safety and Resource Protection (PSRP), serving as part of a specialized statewide team tasked with conducting and coordinating recreational crash and hunting incident investigations. 

This position serves as the law enforcement safety specialist with responsibility for coordinating a comprehensive recreational safety, training, enforcement, crash/hunting incident investigative program within assigned administrative area. This program consists of specialized areas focused on hunting and off-highway vehicles (ATV, UTV, OHM, snowmobile, boats) as well as other outdoor recreational activities.  Provide expertise, training and assistance in hunting incidents and off highway vehicle crash investigations.  Train and provide guidance to our field conservation wardens as well as local and county law enforcement patrols on recreational vehicle use, trends, enforcement, tactics and investigations.  Develop an informational service to include media relations, preventative enforcement and recreational safety messaging.

Job Details

Candidates must meet Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certification requirements as a current law enforcement officer or be eligible for certification through State of Wisconsin Department of Justice reciprocity.

Final Offers/Appointments will be subject to successful completion of the following:

  • Physical Readiness Test based on Department of Justice (DOJ) standards.
  • A comprehensive background investigation, which includes an FBI fingerprint- based background check.
  • Medical exam and psychological testing. Due to the nature of these positions, pre-employment medical examination, drug screening, and psychological testing is required. 
  • Certification in ATV, Boating, Snowmobile and Hunter Safety. Online courses available at Safety Education – Wisconsin.

Training: Upon appointment, all applicants must successfully complete the required paid training requirements, including an abbreviated DNR law enforcement academy, specialized training weeks, field training assignments and pass the NASBLA Practice Swim Test for Officer Water Survival. 

  • Applicants who currently possess law enforcement credentials but are not certified as law enforcement officers through WI DOJ must complete and pass the WI DOJ reciprocity exam by the final job offer to be eligible to attend the abbreviated WI DNR law enforcement academy.

Driver License Requirement: The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy. The candidate must be at least 18 years of age with 2 years driving experience. Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUE violation within the past year are not eligible to drive state vehicles.

Living Requirements: Must comply with division policy on living requirements. Upon successful completion of the training program, must meet the living requirements of the assigned administrative area. The assigned administrative area boundaries may change throughout employment in this position due to business needs.

Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following:

  • Must meet Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certification requirements as a current law enforcement officer or eligible for certification through State of Wisconsin Department of Justice reciprocity.
  • Experience enforcing laws (i.e., effecting arrests, search, and seizure, issuing citations, etc.)
  • as a certified law enforcement officer.
  • Experience with outdoor recreation (e.g. participation in outdoor hobbies like boating, ATV/UTV operation, snowmobiling, etc. and/or certification, training, or education in outdoor recreation activities).
  • Experience collaborating with internal and/or external stakeholders, working with teams or team sports, etc.

In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:

  • Experience enforcing laws (i.e., effecting arrests, search, and seizure, issuing citations, etc.) as a certified law enforcement officer whose primary duty/emphasis was the enforcement of outdoor recreation/natural resource-related laws (recreational patrol efforts in boat/ATV/UTV/snowmobile).
  • Law enforcement training and/or experiences specific to investigating crashes (vehicles, recreational vehicles: ATV, UTV, OHM, snowmobiles, boats, etc.).
  • Experience teaching, training, guiding, mentoring, and/or coaching others in a professional work environment.
