ML Engineer, Research
THIA is seeking a highly qualified AI/ML Research Engineer to join our rapidly growing Research team.
As an AI/ML Research Engineer, you’ll play a crucial role in translating cutting-edge AI research into working prototypes and experimental implementations. Your primary focus will be on building and deploying machine learning models in secure research environments, transforming theoretical concepts into functional code that can be tested and validated. You’ll work closely with our research team to implement novel AI techniques and run comprehensive experiments that push the boundaries of what’s possible in AI technology.

This position is fully remote. However, applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
This role involves work on both Department of Defense contracts (requiring U.S. Citizenship) and commercial projects. U.S. Citizenship is required for some DoD project assignments. Non-U.S. citizens may be considered for commercial project work only, subject to export control restrictions.
Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and deploy machine learning models from research papers and theoretical concepts
- Build end-to-end training pipelines from bare metal cloud instances
- Develop prototypes in secure research environments to validate new AI techniques and methodologies
- Collaborate with research scientists to translate complex algorithms into efficient, testable code
- Conduct comprehensive experiments and performance evaluations of novel AI approaches
- Optimize training processes for various GPU configurations and hardware setups
- Package and deploy research models for internal testing and validation
- Maintain detailed documentation of experimental processes and results
- Stay current with the latest developments in AI/ML research and implementation techniques
Required skills and experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, or related field OR equivalent work experience OR an equivalent combination of both education and experience
- Strong programming skills in Python with demonstrated ability to implement complex ML algorithms
- Hands-on experience with training, fine-tuning, and deploying machine learning models in production-like environments
- Proficiency with Linux/Ubuntu CLI and ability to set up training environments on cloud platforms
- Experience with GPU provisioning, optimization, and modifying training code for various GPU configurations
- Solid understanding of a wide range of AI/ML training techniques and ability to implement diverse approaches
- Experience with Docker containerization and model deployment workflows
- Proven ability to translate research papers and theoretical concepts into working code
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex ML training issues
- Experience working in remote environments with distributed teams
Desired skills:
- Experience with HuggingFace transformers library and ecosystem
- Knowledge of MLFlow or similar experiment tracking and model registry systems
- Experience with transformer architectures, fine-tuning, and optimization techniques
- Background in computer vision, speech recognition or other specialized AI domains
- Familiarity with distributed training frameworks and multi-GPU setups
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) for ML workloads
