2026 Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Intern
WHO WE ARE
As an intern for the Arterial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) program within Metro Transit’s Capital Programs department, you will have the opportunity to learn the basics of the transit arterial BRT planning and project development process in the Twin Cities. You will apply and refine your technical, analytical, and communication skills on important tasks that will advance the work of arterial BRT planning and project development. You will understand the practical application of these tools in the planning process and have an opportunity to participate in and connect with their peers and professionals in the planning community, within Metro Transit, Metropolitan Council, and at our partner agencies. In this role you are asked to complete high importance, high visibility tasks that have a direct impact on the success of the arterial BRT program. Examples range from the development of federal grant applications, technical analysis and reporting around specific planning issues, and materials development and staffing for outreach and engagement events.
Internship Information:
- Length: 1 Year
- Hours: Full-time during summer and Part-time during school year
- Start Date: 06/01/2026
- Location: Minneapolis
NOTE: This position is eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement.
What does an internship with the Metropolitan Council entail?

Who is the Metropolitan Council?
The Metropolitan Councils made up of several operating divisions that service the Twin Cities Metropolitan area in a number of ways.
- Metro Transit provides bus and light rail public transportation for the greater metropolitan area
- Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) manages wastewater treatment plants and the regional wastewater collection system for the seven-county metropolitan region
- Community Development is responsible for helping the Council shape its regional growth plan and Metro HRA provides affordable housing programs in the region
- Metropolitan Transportation Services (MTS) is responsible for the transportation planning functions as the Twin Cities metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for transportation
- Regional Administration provides support services (Finance, Payroll, HR, etc.) for the Council
What you would do in this job
- Map development for communication and geospatial analysis.
- Technical planning analysis and evaluation, including technical report/memo writing.
- Assistance with outreach and engagement activities, including event staffing and materials preparation.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
- Must be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD.) OR be a recent graduate (within 12 months from posting date) from a degree program.
- Candidate's residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin during the internship.
- An UNOFFICIAL transcript is required to be attached to application.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with presentation, graphics, and layout software
- Experience with ESRI ArcMap GIS software
- Strong analytical skills
- Confidence in written and verbal communication
DEGREE PROGRAM/AREA OF STUDY PREFERRED
- Urban Studies, Urban Planning, Geography, GIS, Political Science, Economics, or related field.
