Tata Motors- Customized and Configurable Lite SOA-Based RTOS with Open Middleware- Tata Global Internships

Tata Global Internships- Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles- This internship is a part of Tata Global Internships in India under Tata Group with Tata Motors.

Project Title

Customized and Configurable Lite SOA-Based RTOS with Open Middleware

Foremost Issue to be Resolved

How can TML develop a lightweight, service-oriented RTOS integrated with open middleware to reduce software complexity, accelerate OTA updates, and enable software-defined architectures for next-generation ECUs and IoT devices?

Context

Next-generation ECUs and IoT devices demand:

  • High modularity and reusability
  • Scalable compute footprint
  • IPC/service discovery interoperability
  • Standardized middleware integration (SOME/IP, DDS, MQTT, CAN-FD gateways)

Current Challenges for CV Manufacturers:

  • Legacy software stacks with slow, costly update cycles
  • Heavy OS and middleware maintenance
  • High development cost and complexity
  • Difficulty integrating SDV-ready architectures

A Lite SOA-RTOS environment can address these challenges by enabling:

  • Modular architecture for easy updates
  • Open middleware integration for interoperability
  • Reduced footprint for cost efficiency

Scope

In Scope:

  • Benchmark leading RTOS platforms for:
    • Service-oriented modularity
    • IPC and middleware adaptability
    • Security and safety mechanisms (ASIL-B preferred)
  • Define gaps and propose enhancements
  • Develop architecture proposal and integration strategy with open middleware

Out of Scope:

  • Full-scale commercial deployment
  • Hardware prototyping

Deliverables

  1. Phase 1: Architecture Benchmark & Gap Analysis
    • Compare RTOS platforms for modularity, IPC, middleware adaptability, and safety/security
  2. Phase 2: Benchmark matrix and architecture proposal
  3. Phase 3: Integration plan with open middleware stack (SOME/IP, DDS, MQTT)
  4. Phase 4: Cost/maintenance comparison and deployment toolkit
  5. Phase 5: Lite OS demonstrator (conceptual or simulated)

Automotive Software Architecture & Embedded Systems

Expected Skills

  • Embedded systems and RTOS fundamentals
  • Knowledge of SOA principles and middleware protocols (SOME/IP, DDS, MQTT)
  • Familiarity with automotive safety standards (ISO 26262, ASIL levels)
  • Strong analytical and benchmarking skills

Minimum Requirements

  • Background in Electronics/Electrical/Computer Engineering
  • Exposure to embedded software development and automotive communication protocols
  • Ability to work with simulation tools and prepare architecture proposals

Responsibilities

  • Conduct RTOS benchmarking and gap analysis
  • Propose architecture enhancements for modularity and scalability
  • Develop integration strategy with open middleware
  • Prepare technical reports and conceptual demonstrator
