Speech Language Pathologist (Early Learning)

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE: SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST 

 

FUNCTION: The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) is responsible for providing comprehensive speech and language services to students within the school district. This position involves assessing, diagnosing, and treating communication disorders, as well as collaborating with educational staff and families to support student’s communication needs. All school district employees may perform special assignments and/or other duties as assigned or required by their supervisor. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assessment and Diagnosis:

  • Conduct thorough assessments to evaluate students’ speech, language, and communication.
  • Administer standardized tests, informal assessments, and observations to gather relevant information. 
  • Analyze assessment results to determine the presence and severity of speech and language disorders.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to gather background information to better understand students’ communication challenges.

 

Treatment Planning and Implementation:

  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings and students’ specific needs.
  • Establish measurable goals and objectives to address speech and language deficits. 
  • Implement evidence-based therapeutic techniques and interventions to improve communication skills.
  • Provide direct therapy services to students individually, in small groups, or within classroom settings.
  • Incorporate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies as needed to support students’ communication needs.
  • Monitor students’ progress and adjust treatment plans accordingly to ensure ongoing improvement.

 

Collaboration and Consultation:

  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to develop and implement interventions and support for students. 
  • Provide training and consultation to educational staff on effective strategies for facilitating language development and enhancing communication skills. 
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, to contribute insights and develop comprehensive educational plans for students with communication disorders.

 

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of assessment results, therapy sessions, and progress reports.
  • Complete required documentation in accordance with state and federal regulations, as well as district policies. 

Professional Development and Compliance:

  • Stay current with research, best practices, and trends in the field of speech-language pathology.
  • Participate in professional development activities, workshops, and conferences to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
  • Maintain licensure and certification requirements through ongoing continuing education and professional development activities. 

 

 

MIMINUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Must hold a valid ESA certificate in Washington state. 
  • Must be willing to work with and have empathy for all students of varying abilities. 
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of students with disabilities. 
  • Maintain strict confidentiality by respecting sensitive information regarding students and staff.

 

 

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:

  • Fingerprinting fee paid by applicant, upon hire.
  • District new hire orientation.

 

 

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Physical demands may require prolonged standing, sitting, walking, verbal and written communications, hearing, lifting, exposure to student-carried diseases, and noise levels.
  • Mental demands include organizational skills, concentration, frequent interruptions, accurate record keeping, creativity, adaptability, working independently, yet as a team member, self-discipline in behavior and attitude, decision making, and dealing with distraught/angry/hostile individuals.
  • Indoor and outdoor environment; regular exposure to fumes, dust, and odors.
  • Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regularly work hours specified under contract.
  • Comply with all District Board policies and procedures.  Follow all State and Federal laws.
