Department Description
The Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine offers three dynamic MBA programs – plus PhD, specialty masters and undergraduate business degrees – that prepare business leaders for our digitally driven world. The Research Assistant (RA) will support a study to better understand gender differences in AI adoption and its consequences in the space of open source software which are funded from a grant from Microsoft. This work is in an advanced stage, and currently, we have some tasks to better understand mentorship in open collaboration communities. As such, the RA will assist with preparing datasets containing mentorship patterns from sources such as GitHub, the Linux-Foundation, and others. This position is advertised for a quarter (with the possibility of extension).
Position Summary
- Prepare empirical datasets by parsing unstructured data to extract mentorship relationships
- Data enrichment (e.g. adding covariates to a panel dataset)
- Data linkage of large-scale datasets (containing information on gender) and establishing crosswalks (for individual contributors and firms)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Economics (or related field)
- Experience working with large-scale data
- Experience with scripting languages for data transformation and analysis (e.g. Python, SQL, R, JavaScript)
- Ability to provide work at specified deadlines, clearly document work
Preferred Qualifications
- Adv. degree (M.Sc. or higher) in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Economics (or related)
- Work experience as a data scientist (in open source software, mentorship or related data science work)
- Experience with network analysis (e.g. setting up a network panel)
- Experience using APIs to pull data and cloning repositories and extract data
- Highly responsive and quick to solve problems.
