Summary

Under general supervision, this position ensures the safety and quality of aquatic programs, including life-guarding, first aid, observation, monitoring and patrolling, water safety training and education, and adherence to and enforcement of all applicable rules and policies to maintain a safe environment for all patrons.  Incumbents in this position may also assist with developing, implementing, and leading aquatic programs such as swimming lessons, swim teams, and aquatic fitness classes. Additional responsibilities include providing direction to staff, ensuring programs run on schedule, and various other duties associated with the pool and program operations. This position requires the ability to work nights, weekends, holidays and special events.  Depending on the facility needs, it will be unlikely to have a set weekly schedule.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
This position works under the general direction of the Aquatics Operations Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  
This position exercises supervision of aquatics staff, Instructors, volunteers and others as assigned.

 

Essential Function Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prevents accidents through the enforcement of all rules and regulations through proactive monitoring, patron education, and enforcement of facility rules and regulations 
  • Continuously monitors all patrons in the pool complex through proper scanning techniques
  • Performs safe rescues of swimmers in trouble and administers the necessary First Aid, including the administration of CPR and oxygen as required
  • Conducts daily facility safety checks and reports hazard or maintenance concerns as necessary
  • Prepares accurate and timely incident, accident, and maintenance, reports
  • Leads and develops aquatic instructional programs, including, but not limited to, Learn to Swim, Swim Team Prep, Makos Swim Team, and aquatic fitness offerings. 
  • Provides direct instruction for swim lessons and swim team practices; ensures lesson plans meet City of Palm Beach Gardens standards
  • Assists in the planning and scheduling of group and private swim lessons, clinics, and fitness classes. 
  • Provides mentorship and guidance to Water Safety Instructors and swim coaches to maintain program consistency and excellence. 
  • Assists in continuous evaluation of participant progress, provides feedback, and ensures program quality control. 
  • Assists in the development of new aquatic programming to meet and exceed the community’s needs and expectations. 
  • Provides daily supervision and leadership to part-time lifeguards, instructors, and aquatics support staff
  • Assists with onboarding, mentoring, and evaluating aquatic team members
  • Assists in conducing regular in-service training focusing on lifeguard and/or instructional development 
  • Ensures adequate coverage and proper lifeguard rotations. 
  • Provides on-site management during assigned Manager-On-Duty (MOD) shifts. 
  • Provides First Aid assistance when required, requests police and fire assistance when appropriate
  • Prepares and completes written reports and informs the Aquatics Supervisor about incidences that occur
  • Reports physical hazards and unsafe conditions to management staff
  • Assists all Lifeguards with questions they may have
  • Conducts monthly in-service trainings for the aquatic staff
  • Responsible for the timely rotations of Lifeguards
  • Assists with the scheduling of Lifeguards for proper coverage of the aquatics complex
  • Remains aware of daily events and ensures programs continue as scheduled
  • Ensures all programs run as expected
  • Reports daily events, questions and concerns to aquatics management
  • Provides on-site water safety training, education and swimming instructions, and provides drowning prevention training
  • Assists and ensures all janitorial tasks are completed by the Lifeguards during their scheduled shifts
  • Performs maintenance and custodial duties in and around the complex
  • Performs any other related duties as required or assigned


PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

  • Assists with yearly programming of the aquatic complex
  • Tests the water throughout the day and records on the proper form
  • Ensures the pool deck is always clean, and unused equipment is in the proper location
  • Opens and closes the pool at the scheduled times
  • Assists in other areas of recreation

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED and a minimum of two (2) years of life guarding experience required, and
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, and
  • Must possess and maintain current certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Oxygen Administration throughout employment, and 
  • Must obtain Aquatic Facility Operator Certification or equivalent within six (6) months of employment, 
  • Certifications in Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguarding Instructor are required, and must be maintained throughout employment as a Lead Lifeguard, or
  • Any related combination of education, training and experience

 

Special Qualifications/Preferences

A valid Florida Driver's License with a good driving record
