Part-Time School Nurse
Location: Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School (O-School), Chicago, IL
Reports to: Clinical Director
Compensation: $36.00-$40.00 per hour
Schedule: 20-24 hours per week, flexible based on school calendar and program needs
About the O-School
The Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School is a Therapeutic Day School serving K-12 students with diverse needs, including Autism, Anxiety, and Mood Disorders. We provide a nurturing, individualized educational experience that integrates academic learning with therapeutic support. Our school community includes up to 125 students and also offers a Summer Camp and Diagnostic Center. We are accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education and follow best practices outlined by ISBE, AdvancED, and relevant mental health guidelines.
Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Part-Time Nurse to join our dedicated team. This role supports the health and wellness of students in a therapeutic educational setting and works closely with the Full-Time Nurse and Medical Director to ensure consistent, high-quality care. The ideal candidate is committed to holistic, student-centered support and thrives in a collaborative school environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Administer and document daily medications; provide direct care for injuries, symptoms, and chronic health needs (e.g., asthma, diabetes)
• Lead and support wellness and communicable disease protocols across the school community
• Serve as backup to the Full-Time Nurse and assume responsibilities in their absence
• Maintain accurate health records and ensure compliance with ISBE guidelines and school policies
• Support medical components of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
• Communicate regularly with families, staff, the Medical Director, Consulting Psychiatrist, and external providers
• Participate in school activities and collaborate with faculty to promote a healthy and responsive school environment
Qualifications
• Required: Registered Nurse (RN) with at least five years of pediatric or school-based experience
• Preferred: Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with School Nurse endorsement, or documentation showing it is in process
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic medical record platforms
• Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse populations

Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, move throughout the school, use computers, and complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training and certification.
