The Utah Division of Consumer Protection is seeking an AI Research Investigator to work shoulder-to-shoulder with our investigators, combating unfair and deceptive practices with existing and emerging technologies, like data privacy issues and AI-enabled products used for scams, deep fakes, and harmful hallucinations. This role emphasizes technical comprehension (e.g., using math and statistics, computer science, how systems work, and how data moves), and will be complemented by other team members with policy, business, and legal expertise. As an AI Research Investigator on our team, you will augment the Division of Consumer Protection’s existing investigatory expertise by researching and evaluating a wide range of businesses and business practices related to the deployment of AI, as well as other tech-related topics. PRINCIPAL DUTIES
Your duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Collaborate closely with investigators to share technical and AI-related knowledge that moves investigations forward
- Research data and AI topics relevant to Division priorities, track emerging technologies and incidents, and present findings to management and partner agencies or policy makers
- Understand business models and consumer rights related to relevant investigations
- Provide insight into technology issues, including data privacy and how emerging technologies could be used for investigations
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE - The perfect candidate for this position is someone who has strong technical skills and the ability to adapt to change, someone who can speak to any audience about complex technology topics. We are looking for a strong problem solver who is driven and detail-oriented. Candidates should be familiar with the technology policy landscape and understand how to navigate Artificial Intelligence platforms and tools, and data privacy experience is a plus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience reviewing technical materials (e.g., product documentation, AI model specifications, system architecture) to assess specifications and function.
- Demonstrated experience creating content (memos, reports, presentations) that explains complex technical subjects to both expert and non-expert stakeholders.
- A track record of independently solving problems and reliably delivering on project goals or assignments.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
We may give preferences for applicants with the following:
- Experience implementing and deploying AI or other software, particularly in a business context
- Expertise in aspects of public policy and/or law related to technology
- Experience in regulatory investigations
- Data privacy certifications or training, or demonstrated experience in implementing these practices
- Advanced training or education in a related field such as Computer or Data science, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Law, and Public policy with a focus on Technology or Information policy.
